Movies are almost always filmed in Canada because it's very cheap and producers/studios get a tax credit. A lot of movies that take place in New York are filmed in Toronto.
shareit was also set during a freak cold front with lots of snow so made sense from a filming perspective. You wouldn't have to wait around for cold/snow and cram in filming when you get the setting you want. Unless of course they wrote that into the story because they knew the amount of snow and cold would not be normal for NJ around Xmas time.
