I agree, Rodriguez was not believably tough in this movie. In fact him and Bale seemed more like wannabe fack-ups from the burbs than guys truly from the hood.
He wasn't suppose to be believably tough. Remember, he was severely shaken when the man at the bar was killed and commented on having bad dreams that night. He was NEAR TEARS when he witnessed Jim's meltdown with his girlfriend, and he seemed to be about to throw up when he had to kill Jim. He's not a tough guy, he just is trying to keep up with Jim.
I thought the point WAS that they were wannabes, especially Mike. They grew up in the hood, but they weren't gangsters. Jim was only more violent because he went off to war.
And yeah, while it theoretically could happen, I also found his wife kinda unbelievable. You would think she would have left him or have been planning to leave him, unless shes a rare woman.
If theoretically it could happen, why is Sylvia unbelievable? She's not rare at all. You could probably watch Dr Phil or Oprah on any given week and see that. There are plenty of women (and some men) who stay with people because they think they can help them change.
When the hurly-burly's done. When the battle's lost and won.
