In the end of the movie, there is the shootout where Jim kills 4 people after Mike pulled a gun on one of them. Jim hops in the car with Mike and they start driving away as the dad runs out and blasts through the car and hits Jim. Later on Mike takes Jim's life with his handgun.
So...do you think Mike ever got caught? His fingerprints were on the gun that killed Jim in the end and I don't think he kept the gun. Did he? Also is there anyway the 4 murders of the drug dealers minutes before that could get back to Mike?
I realize this question doesn't matter a whole lot because at the end of the movie it's like "who really cares??" But I was just curious as to what other people thought.
first one is. do the cops care? open and shut case. drug deal gone bad. 5 drug dealers dead. so we're not really to concerned about finding the killer.
but if they do really want to find the killer. they will find mike, the old guy will talk. say there were 2 guys in the car. jims dead. wheres the other guy. im assuming jim has a criminal record. (but i could be wrong, considering he was training to be a cop. im pretty sure they have zero tolerance for previous offenders). anyway if he does chances are mike has one to. either way that LAPD guy who wanted them to party with him knows mike was in the car that day and was jims best friend. mike is the first person they talk to. He probly admits it. depending on many factors he'll either get off or go down for murder.
although, theres no evidence to suggest jim didnt shoot himself. its his gun. mikes his best friend, no reason why mikes prints wouldnt be on the gun also. whos to say jim didnt put the gun to his own head if mike says thats what he did. =P
The old man would not be considered a reliable witness in IDing Mike as the other person in the car. The police would be able to obviously tell that there was someone else driving simply from the available evidence though.
However to at least arrest Mike they do have forensic evidence. Gun powder residue and blood on his clothes (unless he burned them), fingerprints on the gun and all over the car. Mike did mention that he was on probation so they have all his info on file. It wouldn't take long for them to find and question him. Mike is clearly not a pathological liar and has trouble keeping cool in stressful situations so it's likely they would be able to extract a confession out of him.
It would get tied back to Mike but fortunatly she's connected with lawyers so she'll sacrifice her reputation and career to make sure Mike doesn't see jail time by calling in favors or begging that someone defends him.
He'll probably get off on some technicality, she'll eventually lose her job, and they both start again from square one--except no Jim to screw it up. Happy ending.

Except Jim already screwed it up. Sad ending.

Yes Mike is Jim's best friend, everybody around town knew. They will question Mike and he will more than likely spill the beans since he is not a pathological liar. Also, Mike is on probation so he would be back behind bars in no time. His girlfriend out of love and affection will more than likely defend him but in the end she will more than likely move on. Being in state prison is no fun in California so gang inmates will more than likely shank/kill Mike to get revenge for the people that was killed by Jim. Mike predicted the outcome but his loyalty was too strong.
