$12 an hour is a dream job????

It seemed really strange to me that Mike was so excited about $12 an hour and even stranger that his girl friend, who was a lawyer, would think that's a lot of money.

well its better than flipping burgers? plus it was a good job with benefits and he was saying something about promotion and an office?
mike supported her through college so i assume he was working and doesnt have many (any) qualifications. so that job isnt bad.

Ok, maybe you missed what they said: "DREAM JOB"

Is it a better job than flipping burgers? Yes. Is it a dream job? Would a lawyer think it pays really good? NO.

and you know what everyone thinks, do you? NO.

Let me just point out again that it was actually his lawyer girlfriend who called it a dream job. That's why it's so hard for me to buy.

no, mike said it first... she replied with "yeah, a dream job"...

and $12/hr starting salary with benefits in three months, for a company that makes all the new condos downtown sounds like a damn good job opportunity, if not a 'dream job'....

It was probably a dream job for someone without any decent qualifications or further education.

Think about why he had to print so many CV's out in the first place and lie with Jim about going to different places it wasn't always just cause he wanted to chill it was cause he was a clown with little to no reasons for someone to employ him.

it was a dream job, because its "a great job, the pay is outstanding, and it's a great opportunity for me to do what i want to do", according to mike... also, from what i gather, he did have qualifications, because he said something about updating his certifications when someone leaves in 3 months, therefore filling his position....

the reason he had so many CVs was because at that point, he was just looking for a job, something to pay the bills... yes, he did luck out that his old friend was doing the interviews, because he ended up on the path to a career, instead of just doing something to make money...

Married people with kids are less likely to quit a job on a whim, and employers know that.

reply

She didn’t need him to be making $48 an hour. She just needed him to be working.

It probably isn’t a “Dream job”, but to Sylvia it was a sign that Mike would grow up and stay out of trouble. She probably would’ve been happy if he got a job at Blockbuster Video, but the fact that he got a job with a good amount of responsibility, benefits and chances for advancement within the company was amazing.

I don't get the feeling that she earns all that much. Isn't she a public prosecutor or something?

reply

If I was making $12 an hour I'd be throught the roof. A pay raise is a pay raise.

$12 an hour is better than what he is currently contributing...nothing.

In the long run, it's not alot of money, but it's $24000 more coming into the HOUSEHOLD than is currently.

reply

Hm, this is what I don't get from that scene: Sylvia said something like: "this is so....typical Mike. you can't get out and get a *beep* job." Why in earth would she want him to have a *beep* job like flipping hamburgers at Mcdonalds???? I thought she said she doesn't want to feel like his mother like she does now? Well, if he would get that *beep* job then she would still have to support his ass like a parent would do, or what????

reply

Working at McDonald's or anywhere else means he's making his own money. Right now, she's handing him lunch money and practically telling him to be a good boy as he walks out the door. Getting and KEEPING a job, whatever it is, shows he's got at least a little focus.

Working at a fast food joint MIGHT inspire him to go towards something that could be an actual career. Jim inspires him to get drunk and get high.

Bingo. She even says to him that she doesn't care about money, that it's not about money etc. She just loves him and wants him to contribute SOMETHING to the relationship and to make his own money, even if it's not a whole lot. Also she really wants to know that he's doing something productive while she's at work and not just cruising around the city getting into trouble with that idiot Jim.

reply

12 an hr is not a lot of money. You think the firm that hired him would have been making more money. Maybe they start him off in training and then increase his pay the longer he stays. Who knows, then again, its only a movie.

I know a friend of mine who wife reacted the same way. I think some professional women like to keep the reigns in a relationship where they are the sole provider. She was happy that Mike got the job but she also felt as though she would be losing control.

reply

Funny I thought the exact same thing.
But then I told myself "oh well who cares let's see how it goes on" :p

reply

I'd say that she was happy for him. Wouldn't it be more strange for her to say "just 12$ an hour?".

I don't think any wife in her right mind would do anything else than being happy for him. For him it was probably a dream job, and she just supported him instead of pulling him down.

Someone said Blockbuster. I work at Blockbuster and make $24 an hour.

And it seemed like an okay job, plus it seemed he'd get promoted pretty quickly.

This film takes place in the early 90's. Case closed.

reply

no yoo...

He said $12/hour for 3 months and then replacing a guy leaving. Then he'll be making "bank" renewing his MIS certs. the 3 months is probably a training period. For him it is a dream job. His job was out sourced since he works in I.T. IT is the #1 thing getting outsourced to India.

lawyers take a lot of loans to get through school. easily $38tuition + 20k living, $180k debt. students loans at 10% interest now, thats $18k /year in interest alone.

Love the movie. it reads like a biography.

No it doesn't. Jim is applying for a job at DHS, which didn't exist until the George W. Bush administration.

reply

"This film takes place in the early 90's. Case closed."

No it doesn't and 12 bucks a hour isn't bad at all.

reply

Is this what most people think? I'm not being judgmental, but that just doesn't sound like that much to me - maybe it depends on age, or the economy where you live.

If you work an 8 hour day, you're only making $96 dollars a day - post taxes, you're really probably pulling in only about 60-something bucks a day. Where I'm at, you wouldn't be able to afford a place to live on those wages, not to mention food, electricity, heat, or a life. I have to think LA has to be one of the more expensive places to live as well, so you'd have to take that into account, I'd imagine.

Then again, I guess Mike already had a house and a girlfriend who could pay most of the bills, so I'm sure that makes it easier. I just can't imagine she'd stay happy for too long on that kind of income - she essentially would still have to pay a good deal of the bills, which would get irritating, I'd think.

reply

like someone else said, the 12 an hour was probationary, and then he'd be supposedly moving up quickly and be making bank. i agree, it is confusing how he even mentions the 12 an hour like it's a plus.

reply

$12 an hour back then was pretty good when minimum wage was around $7 or so. Plus, it was an office job with benefits. He will have enough money every month for spending and saving.

reply

Back when? 2005?

reply

Yeah, $12 an hour isn't sht... Even if you get benefits, but like some people on the board are saying, it's better than nothing. I don't know, but I think the setting determined the wage. They're going out of their way to sell a gun for $300 and Bale feels like a millionaire when he transports the drugs across the border, because he's getting $3k from the connect.

reply

In LA $12 bucks an hour isn't jack. you'd use up 1 hr just getting lunch every day. to have a house like they seemed to have, it's probably a $400K house, which aint cheap. Even if renting, that's probably around $2,100 a month. I also find it funny that people think all Lawyers make tons of money. Not quite so. you CAN make good money as a lawer, if you're good & if you're working w/ corporate law, the amount goes up. but many just make a living like everyone else.

reply

Exactly. The film was written in 96. No cell phones are seen in the movie, only landlines were used by all the characters and the rap music played in the movie is mainly from the 90s as well.

Min wage in my state is the the federal minimum of $7.25 so that's almost double. I would be very excited to start at that. Most minimum wage jobs you just increase 3% every year so it would take a long time to hit 12 bucks an hour. It also sounded like there was room for growth and advancement.

Plus, he had a record and I'm assuming he didn't have a college education or the best resume.

reply

Fair point. If the expectation was to have something better than minimum wage. He's golden. It just seemed illogical that he'd even have a house. gone are the days when you could make $100k and have the picket fence, house & nice things. now if you have a $100K salary you're barely above middle class.

reply

he did say that he was going to try to take over their MIS position and that can be a six figure salary
