are all the characters still there?

since i havent watched this show for some time.
what happened to pter mcnicols character and is the father still alive?

Larry (Peter M) returned a few episodes ago and Alan Eppes is still living and has returned to college (CalSci).

he looked like a hippie, but when he came back he was like he was in the beginning, the Larry i loved

but why did they make the character go away for some episodes? I mean, was something wrong with the actor?

Budget reasons. Too many characters, paid too much, so some of the secondary characters don't appear in every episode.
