The math in the series is all based on real mathematical formulas and equations (Game Theory makes a repeat appearance throughout, for example). A good book to read if you want to know more (even if you're not a math geek, it's a good read) is The Numbers behind Numb3rs by Keith Devlin and Gary Lorden, who was the consultant mathematician on the show. It demonstrates how the various algorithms/formulas/theories were applied throughout. Yes, there are inaccuracies and sometimes the math is downright wrong, but you have to remember that this is a fictional show so there is some allowance for 'artistic licence'. But generally, it's pretty much on the money.
