Finally - someone else who thinks this! I wouldn't go so far as to say he looks "stupid," but he does look unprofessional.

yeah maybe stupid isn't the word, but he just looks weird, and it doesn't suit his persona, that's the only time he ever does it, and it just looks out of context.

shareI know a few cops, and chewing gum is often used in stake outs and when they are waiting to enter a building. Any tense waiting period. It is meant to help physically lower tension and steady heart rate, or something of that sort, so I am told.from what I understand it is a very common thing to do amongst cops.

shareI can't quite agree that it's "stupid," given the reason he does it. I'm not sure that chewing gum on a stakeout can be considered "unprofessional," either. I agree that his gum-chewing often looks cheesy and even childish--I've noticed it myself--but I don't see how it's any different than cops/detectives/agents having those never-ending cups of coffee, either. As has been mentioned, chewing gum is a bit of a stress-reliever, and it's obviously based on real activity. Basically it's a stress-ball that doesn't require the use of the person's hands.
