I actually liked this better than Saw I

I'm making my way through the series for the first time and I actually ended up enjoying this one more than the first. The plot felt tighter/faster paced and getting more background on Jigsaw's motivations added more weight to the film. Plus I felt the twist was a little better as well. 8/10 movie for me.

Blasphemy!

Agreed, Saw II for the win!

Yeah I lean towards Saw II & Saw III being the peaks in this franchise. They took what made the original great and expanded upon it with Saw II having 4x the budget of the original and Saw III having nearly 10x the budget. Better gore, twists just as good, better production values and acting.

I thought Saw 1 sucked. I had a friend try to explain to me, "he thinks people don't appreciate their lives enough", and I'm like yeah, I got that, I just think it's completely stupid. The whole plot and character's actions made no sense, and the ending can be substituted with just the text "trololol" and nothing would be any different.

A lot of Saw 2 was like a teeny bopper flick or something, but it worked pretty well. The basic plot was sort of recycled in Saw 4, which I actually liked more than most people did... but to me, the best were 3, 5 and 6. They were all really ballsy, brutal and ended horribly, but in a good way. I respected it, even if I didn't "like" it.

I like the first Saw but yes it is very contained and the most minimalistic in the franchise. It's twist was good and I remember me and the people I saw it with back in 2004 being surprised when it was being revealed. I mean there was no real hint or reason for the man in the bathroom with them to be alive and the one doing it. But truthfully the twists in Saw 2 & 3 were probably better and more consequential for the characters.

As I said in 2 & 3 the gore and trap sequences were ramped up, the production values were much better, more locations were used, I think the acting also improved and we also got to see a lot more of Tobin Bell as John Kramer/Jigsaw. The lore and methodology was really expanded upon in the sequels.

There is no real reason for the first film to be considered the best outside of the 'original is always the best' mindset which so many people adopt and accept without question. Everything that made Saw what it is (mystery, elaborate traps and gore, twists and revelations) were much greater in the sequels.

Uhh...I disagree with all of you.

I can see that. I think Saw I was more original.
