The worst complaint one can make about a film is that it is boring, and The Fog(2005) is boring.
I thought the makeup effects were really well done, but they were a waste of good makeup. Horror movies work amazingly well when less is shown, and the original The Fog left alot of things to the imagination, which is why it was such a creepy, eerie film. The biggest fault of this film is that it shows far too much. When Stevie's friend died in the original, he gets dragged into the fog, and we don't see him ever again. The way Carpenter shot the film, it was really eerie and creepy. In the remake, he gets dragged into the fog, and then gets spat out in a blazing ball of fire. Huh? Can they not even stick to a tried and trusted method of killing people. One minute their taking the victims eyes, the next setting them on fire, the next they rot them rapidly...alot of them are without explanation.
The old guy getting dragged into the sea is a ridiculously idiotic death. Just stupid. Kid running from the fog was comical. There was not nothing eerie or creepy about the film, the story was nonsensical, and the use of CGI fog looked terrible. A real physical fog, as used in the original, was a far more interesting and creepy effect than the tacky CGI fog used in the film.
We just should not have seen the ghosts themselves, bar the silhouette. Even in the original, we never saw their faces, merely the hooded figures.
The Fog was always present also, which added to the creepiness. Never knowing when someone was gonna be attacked meant we were always on the edge of our seats. Characters were introduced, develloped and killed off.
The ending has been criticised before, and I have to say the ending was atrocious. Made no sense whatsoever.
The reason, or one of the many reasons the original was so successful, was because we cared about the characters, and did not want to see them die. Its the difference between Friday the 13th and Halloween, both are entertaining films, but the original Halloween makes us care about the victims, while Friday 13th has us rooting for Jason.
