Please explain if Elizabeth (Maggie Grace) was supposed to be a reincarnation of "dead" Elizabeth. Was she reborn?? Was the book responsible? Is that what happened at the end when she "re-united" with Capt. Blake? I am a little confused by the end. Thanks.
I also though this ending was confusing. I came here looking for an explanation, and I guess this is as good as it gets. When will horror filmmakers realize that it's okay to make a conclusive and understandable ending to movies? It doesn't have to be all mysterious and confusing!
That is exactly what I thought! It would have been a classic, romantic ending had the pretty wife been kidnapped, and Elizabeth was her decendant. But no, they just came back for a chick who looked like one of them that had died, but inexplicadly did not become a ghost.
Didn't Blake also drown? So he wouldn't have gotten sucked into the ship's timewarp either.
I thought Elizabeth was the reincarnation of the original woman because: * She had been having dreams of the fire onboard ship and drowning even in NY * She thought she had seen the symbol on the pocket watch before * She states that she never felt like she belonged on the island
I liked the movie and want to see the original now.
these points make sense to me. i just finished watching the movie for my third time, and i've always thought that she was the reincarnation of the original woman. i just don't understand why she was reincarnated and nobody else at all from the ship was... although i figure it was just a hollywood decision to create a twist ending. there may have been an explanation at some point [or so i hope]... maybe it just got lost on the cutting room floor?
i really want to see the original now, with the amount of people saying how crap this version is and how awesome the original is. i just have to find a copy somehow..
I guess it was that ecverlasting love thing, there were no explanations aprt from her having dreams or flashbacks I would love to see the original too, having not seen it since ages ago, the fog people from the ship looked better, instead of phoney looking cgi
In the original the ship was called the Elizabeth Dane and Jamie Lee Curtis character was named Elizabeth....purely coincidental. But for some reason those who remade it figured to intertwine the two in a hot mess of a story line and a failed remake.
yeah i must admit, i kinda wondered on the finish of the film too, although the reincarnation theory seems to be what every1s going for.
i think it kinda helps if you've seen the original, it certainly helped with me, while i think this isnt nearly as good as the original its still not bad, i mean come on 3.3???? this isnt nearly as bad as ghost of mars which i found pathetic!!! least this had good decent creepy momments in it, but hey i guess different strokes
I might have generously overlooked all the points that did not make any sense and would just like to share my impressions:
I thought it was an interesting twist in the end. To me, the modern-day-Elizabeth was the link between the past and the present. It was she who slowly uncovered the truth, found the diary and felt the compassion for what happened. I also remember that interesting sentence she said, like she never belonged on that island. Also, when I first saw her, when Nick picked her up by the roadside, my first thought was that she was a ghost. Maybe it was her main purpose in her existence to establish the connection between the past and the present and give the ghosts their peace. The reincarnation and reunion with her great love was a nice bonus to her destiny, IMO.
oh come on! How the hell did Donkey and the Dragon make babies in "Shreck"? Films don't always have to be realistic. Especially ghost/mystery/horror movies.
PS: Have you ever seen Shutter? That one leaves open questions, too, but in the universe of this film, it does make sense.
Yeah, but if this is a major plot device in the movie, it's a bit limp. It's not remarkable, nor thought provoking, it's just trivia. Explains the plodding pace in this movie. Just lame.
Apparently - no offense - some people fail to think in a bit bigger dimensions.
IMO the film takes the idea of reincarnation and puts it on a higher level.
Maybe the modern Elizabeth was only born to meet up with the love of her life again. Once she recognized him, she became a spirit again, they were united in the afterlife and her soul found peace.
Of course one has to be open to unusual ideas.
But maybe that's just me. Thinking a bit farther than the obvious.
Wow thats really a all your made up far fetched version. Only you I guess thought of that one. Come on give me a break...lol The movies ta the end made no sense and I guess anyone can make up what they want. The original is by far better and doesnt do this ending as this one does.
I thought Elizabeth was a phantom, at least that is the only way I can explain how she could have a huamn form and be a ghost at the same time. The revenge started a 100 years later and according to lore that's how long it will take for a ghost to gain enough power to manifest itself corporeally. All in all, mediocre film.
Interestingly enough, I considered that, too. Especially the first scene that shows modern Elizabeth, she is in the shadows and appears as a ghost. So yeah, could be. Very interesting take on the story!
--- We're all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.
In the scene where new Liz falls into the water, they cut back and forth between old and new Lizzie. New Lizzie makes it to the dock and survives. Old Lizzie also lives.
So Old Lizzie lives, and is her mom's mom's mom. The looks pass down and hey new Lizzie looks just like her great great great grandma.
I know, her mom doesn't look like her. It happens.
