SEAGAL IS BACK!!!

I got this film today early from Best Buy. Shhh. My buddy and I watched it tonight. It's so good, especially compared to the his films of last year. It's definitely better than Submerged, and even though I really enjoyed Into the Sun, Today You Die has way more action and excitement. I was so pleasantly suprised with this flick, with the amount of action, sheer good old Seagal style butt kicking, and the lack of dubbing. Seagal's voice was in 95% of this movie, and its so refreshing compared to Submerged and Out of Reach. I'm a die hard Seagal fan and this is one of the best films he's done in years. If you are in any way a fan of Steven, I strongly urge you to rent or pick up a copy of this film. It puts away all bad memories of The Foreigner and Out for a Kill. I'm thrilled for his next flick!

That's what i was thinking, i guess he's too fat and out of shape to do his own fighting scenes. Everytime there's something physical the room suddenly is dark and no faces are shown. Check out the ponytail which looks so different from Seagal's. Also loved the oversized leather coat to hide his gut and trying to make his shoulders look twice as big. This guy has turned into a joke. The movie was not horrible but you won't have fond memories about it.

reply

i heard everyone saying he bailed and all this stuff
but honestly
the use of double seemed to be minimal, some spots you could tell but you had to look extremely close. theres no belly of the beast ridiculous flying kicks, but for the most part it is steven.

reply

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm hearing bad things. Stunt doubles, bad plot, bad directing, and the use of stock footage...which I already knew about. I mean anyone else notice the outdated police cars in the trailer???

reply

I only have 1 question. Does Seagal wield a gun for most of the movie, if yes I'll skip it. He's been making failed gun totin' movies for ten years, isn't it time he puts guns to bed and make a real, solid, martial arts film?

reply

I find that incredibly hard to believe. I could hear what sounded like voice dubbing in the trailer.

And you didn't mention the fact that it uses stock footage, and most of the action in the trailer is stock footage.

I'm pretty sure this is going to be his worst in years.

reply

Seagal's movies are so bad they couldn't really get any worse. And I say that objectively. If you need to get some perspective on what I think is a great film, watch Requiem for a Dream, Casablanca...

I gave up on Seagal making a decent film years ago and he hasn't surprised me yet. Dennis Hopper is a terrible actor but at least he's terrible in good movies. Seagal is just in terrible movies.

I always felt he could do more, be in better films, but it hasn't happened yet.

For goodness sake people!!!!!!! To all those "fans" who keep posting saying "why doesn't he do more action/appear in more fights etc." The man is about 93(not really but he's gotta be in the late fifties at the least!), he CANNOT pull off a high kick that looks anywhere near half decent anymore because he's past it..he's an old man!

Do you not realise how many years have passed since Nico and Out for Justice - where he really would show off some thrilling fight scenes. He was getting on a bit in those films so why all the stunt doubles now? Go figure it out !! The only reason he is still used at all in any film is because of his NAME, the name sells the films because the people that buy them forget that although he was once great - he is now 93.

reply

But he never did any high kicks in his earlier films and besides if you're a master in aikido you don't have to be young you can actually be 93 and still beat someone half that age.

reply

damn right, who knows sumthing about O-Sensei, very old man who could handle anyone.

reply

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH U PEOPLE?? HE IS 54!!!!!!!!
AND HE DOESNT DO HIGH FLYING KICKING. JET LI AND VAN DAMME DO THAT.

reply

Aikido isnt about "high kicks" ....fooooooooooooooool

Even the most primitive society has an inate respect for the insane

reply

yep there is some voice dubbing in the trailer
there is that and about 2 other lines that are dubbed in the entire flick.
i was actually quite suprised how much steven's voice is actually in this one.
as far as stock footage, there is one explosion that looks bad, the rest i couldnt even really tell.
everyone made this sound like it was going to be his worst film ever, but in my opinion, its a step up from the last few. rent it, and you won't be disappointed...well you will if youre expecting another Under Siege.

reply

There seems to be some delusion here I'm afriad. Today You Die is crap. The doubling is so noticable it takes the piss. You can't notice Seagal's parts in the fights thats how bad it is. The best action scene is taken from another movie! They also stole some stock footage from the Order, a Van Damme movie!

This is speaking as a one time fan of Seagal, this movie stinks and I feel violated.

reply

What exactly was the footage that was taken from the order?

"Take your big stick and your boyfriend, and find a bus to catch"

reply

I haven't seen the movie yet but, i'm not expecting anything great from it. I had my hopes up on Submerged and that was no good but, Today You Die looks alot better then Submerged.

reply

Submerged is actually better. I don't think Submerhged would have been half bad if it wasn't for Seagal, he really stank the movie up which is a shame.

reply

i enjoyed Today You Die a lot more than Submerged mostly due to the director. Anthony Hickox just directing just looks like amatuerish (like the opening scene with the photo taking airplane)

reply

Actually, I thought the directorial job in Submerged was the best Seagal has had in some time. It's a pitty his prescence did that movie absolutely no favours. If Vinnie Jones's character was the lead, I'm sure I would have enjoyed it a lot more.

I like Seagal, but really, the only one to blame for the way his career has gone is really himself.

reply

Seagal is far from back. This film was terrible and anyone that thinks otherwise must have been drunk when they saw it.First of all he did not do most of the fight scenes in the movie.

What he lacked in dubbing he made up in stunt doubles. It was so obvious that it was not him. This stunt double walked differently and from behind looked alot sllimmer than Seagal.I am a fan but this last film was a disappointment.I personally liked Belly of the Beast and Into the Sun way better than this tripe.

I think that he should just quit if he is not willing to participate more in his films. It's a disrespect to the fans and all his admirers and it makes me wonder if he is ill or something. His weight is not an issue with me since I am a martial artist myself and know that his weight would not impede his skill.I have known some great heavy set martial artist in my time.Everyone forgets Sammo from the tv show Martial Law he was heavy set but fast.

reply

I watched it earlier today and yes the film is terrible, I think it's his worse film yet. The plot sucked and the action was all stunt double and stock footage.

reply

i agree with chatpilot, i wish he would participate more in his movies cause it makes me wonder if he still has a passion for films and is not just in it for the money, him and van damme are my favorite actors and van damme is starting to get this right but seagal is just getting sloppy, i think the only reason he uses stunt doubles is not because he cant do the fighting but because hes never on set which is also the reason for the dubbing, cause 2 of the fights in this he did all himself cause he was there, but rhe first fight of the movie was 100% of his stunt double cause he wasnt even there, but if he slims down and cuts his hair short and neat like in exit wounds and stops dressing monkish people would take him more seriously, and if all of his direct to videos were as good as belly of the beast hed be back on top

You see this face?... This is a happy face

reply

I TOTALLY AGREE

The last 5 years all we ever see from Seagal in his fights is tight mid-close up shots of him waving his hands at the camera, looking like he is playing pat-o-cake. then we are treated to wide shots of his numerous overworked stunt doubles. It was however horendous in TOday You Die. The thing is Seagal has never been thin. Even in his early days he had a hint of the paunch but still moved quickly. He was fast and skillful. Now he looks bloated and constantly constipated, give that man some Turbo-Lax.

Old days you were treated to plenty of wide shots showing Seagal picking off bad guys left and right with skill and speed. He idd a lot of his own stunts (remember him riding the roof of a moving carin Nico?). Seagal is overwieght but they can't seriously tell me he is that slow and crap that they can't show him doing some fighting. I want to see Seagal in wide angle. Belly of THe Beast had some over the top but enjoyable aciton but it grated when all of a sudden we would have a double do a jumping spin kick. The aciton should stazy true to what Seagal is capable of. Keep him on the spot, picking of bad guys with his aikido, show it, making him movie.

Question: Seagal fans, what would you rather have?

A: Seagal doing his own fights and perhaps not as elaborate or quick as he was used to doing, but perofroming it for us to plainly see.

B: Let his stunt double do it at the appropriate speed, but looking totally unrealistic and different from how Seagal's frame should move.

My anSwer is mmost definitely A.

I choose A too

dont degrade people who liked this movie its there opinion and theres alone

i personally thought submerged sucked and untill i saw today you die i thought steves career was over i really like today you die i think its seagals best since half past dead

reply

Steven Seagal movies are for 8 year olds. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have more exciting & REALISTIC action sequences then anything Seagal has done since Under Siege 2. This guy has no respect for his admirers and seriously that's a shame! Cuz he did have very good career there for a while.
Above the Law
Out For Justice
Under Siege 1 & 2
Marked For Death
Exit wounds

reply

I think Exit Wounds came out AFTER Under Siege 2 :)

reply

I think Seagall admirers should also give their age. Thus all will be clear. Maybe he and his movies are still a hit for underaged ppl. Real underaged. He's finished, let's face it. Regards.

just watched this today, it is easily one of the better DTV movies he has done. not great by any means but I watched it unaware of the small budget and supposed production problems I had heard of. plus it had some genuinely humourus moments. I'd give it 3/5 whereas submerged was a 2/5.

Is this film really (as in for real) good?

What is Seagal's fight against Randy Couture like?

"Anything is possible"
- Royce Gracie

[deleted]

yup, I second that description of the couture cameo, plus to answer your question, it's a decent DTV movie only, you have to rate it in realms of low budget direct to dvd action movies.

Yes Seagal, who formerly fancied himself a character imbued with Asian culture, is now embracing a new black alter ego in Tomorrow You Die. Maybe this is a trend of longer standing than this writer has noticed, but it seems clear that Seagal's deportment has taken on a distinct urban flavor. Never mind that bulging gut, those sagging box office returns, as Seagal re-invents himself as a Vanilla Shaft, we're sure he's poised for a big comeback.

this is just a bad movie from beginning to end...
i'm suprised he made such a movie and trying
to talk like a bro just came off really wrong...

It was not a classic Seagal movie, but compared to his last few it was watchable. The stunt double thing needs sorted out and the bad dubbing, every single movie he has a double for just about everything. I was amazed in one fight scene where Seagal actually raised his foot about 6 inches of the ground to kick someone and followed it up with a punch without the aid of a stunt double. He needs to cut out the love scenes, it aint pretty watching Seagal with his paws all over women less than half his age.

reply

what a joke. this movie sucked big time.
