am i the only one who thinks that smoking is blamed for everything??
seriously, ppl need to chill. my parents have been smoking since the 80s, and they are perfectly healthy.
shareseriously, ppl need to chill. my parents have been smoking since the 80s, and they are perfectly healthy.
sharePerfectly healthy? :P I doubt it.
Smoking causes alot of health problems, and just because they aren't visual they can still be dangerous.
are u a doctor.......no your not so stfu
shareI've been smoking since the mid 70's and I'm healthy as a horse. A horse who is limp, overweight with asthma.
But the key point about smoking and health is the exercise/activity component. I know smokers who can run a 5k with ease and speed. I know others who get winded walking up a flight of stairs. Smoking tends to make people exercise less, and from that is where most of the health issues stem.
Then there's the cancer and lung disease that exercise won't curtail. But exercise could certainly give people the stamina and will to survive treatments and/or the symptoms better than the couch potato.
I don't need you to tell me how good my coffee is. .
I'd say it has a lot more to do with the stigma attached to smoking. Most people who don't smoke now choose not to smoke because "it's bad for you" which means there's a good chance that they avoid other things that are "bad for you". Someone who smokes accepts the fact that they're "bad for you" and probably accepts other things in life that are "bad for you". It's why studies that take obesity and other life-style choices into consideration when looking into smoking have much different results than studies that don't.
Remember in the 40's and 50's around half of America smoked but many could argue that they were healthier then because obesity rates were much lower and people were generally more active due to farming and manufacturing being the main sources of employment.

I don't know any smokers who think that smoking isn't a health hazard in one form or another. The very fact that your first inhale results in your body trying to expel the poisons is a good clue that it's not health-enhancing! (My 3-year old had his first taste of beer the other day and his body rejected it faster than a goat-liver transplant. "remember that taste, son")
Of course, the health risks are irrelevant. A person has the choice. And people should continue to have the choice.

Well, we DO live in a world where expert opinions are diverse and a dime a dozen. The same denials can be said for global warming, cell phone usage and cooking food (yes, cooking food has been linked to cancer).
Granted, the OP displays a flawed sequence of logic. But like I say, just because something is bad for you is no reason to stop doing it.

"Sugar is bad for you, are you going to stop drinking soda or eating sh*t like cake, ice cream, and candy bars?"
Depends on the quantities we are comparing. Eating excessive amounts of sugary foods is dangerous. Just like smoking excessive amounts of cigarettes. Everything in excess is bad, but some things have a lower threshold than others.
"Are you going to stop having sex too, you know because condoms aren't 100% effective against pregnancy and STDs."
When used perfectly, the male condom is 97% effective. When used less than ideally, it is 86% effective. I will take those odds to Vegas. Plus the positive feeling (with the exception of drunk sex and the regret after) and caloric workout there are more pluses to sexual activity than cigarette smoking.
I agree with the last statement. Humans can be hedonistic. We may not always fully analyze the consequences. If my friend Captain-Perverto developed a terminal illness from smoking and Christopher Walken gave him a remote, he might press rewind so he could slap some sense into past Perverto. Then buy some lottery tickets.
And why are you still on this movie board Captain?
[deleted]
I gave up this board a long time ago. I have you in my friend's list and I sw you posted here again. Now you know what my story is, I am your stalker!
I have never smoked and I gave up drinking. Smoking was never for me since I have respiratory issues and I do not like the smell of cigarettes. But you are right non-smokers and their need to tell you what to do. They are just like PETA.
In the year 2010 where there is no lack of education on the dangers of smoking, if Captain Perverto chooses to smoke let the bastard smoke in peace. Legislation was added where I am from to ban smoking in confined, public places. So everyone wins. The smokers get to smoke outside of the bars and clubs, while the non-smokers get to enjoy re-circulated, dirty office air.
I would be really worried if I was your Life Insurance company though. Wild sex with sluts and a long history of smoking? You are going out with a bang.
[deleted]
Sex isn't bad for you. When you have sex and use a condom/certain pills etc., you aren't at risk for STDs 100% of the time. However, when you smoke, you're at risk for lung diseases and other respiratory problems 100% of the time. True, a smoke won't kill you immediately...but cigarettes do damage your health in some way or another. Sex is not detrimental ALL the time. Pregnancy can be avoided while still having sex. But you can't smoke some weird organic cigarette that magically stops you from dealing with the consequences.
When I say 'bad', I mean bad like, death bad. Something that will kill you versus what, sex? Yes, certain STDs are extremely damaging (syphilis) , but there are plenty of ways to avoid those STDs whilst still having sex. As for smoking? The same can't be said.
And sugar? You know it all depends on the amount...and even diabetic patients need some form of sugar. Sugar isn't all bad. Sure, certain soft drinks are very unhealthy, but what research has shown that they will eventually lead to lung cancer or asthma.

However, if something is bad for you, why wouldn't you stop?
Because life consists of more than just physical health and longetivity. I'm of the philosophy that my time here on Earth isn't worth squat if i'm not experiencing the joys that the planet has to offer- and that includes doing things that are bad for my health.
I'm holding everyone to a higher standard- a standard much higher than my own
But if you want to experience the joys of life, wouldn't PROLONGING that life be helpful? I mean, if you drop dead in like, 5 years because of certain bad habits that are hazardous to your health...then what's the point? I wouldn't be able to experience the other joys of life, because I fked me life up by smoking/eating too much red meat/etc.
I mean, say you started a family (a joy of life according to lots), then why would you want to condense that due to some silly bad habit of yours? Then you leave the planet because of something you could have completely avoided; and you've shortened your time on Earth without fully experiencing the other joys?

Because part of who I am consists of what I do.
I enjoy cooking and eating fatty, unhealthy foods. I like creating them and I like the way they taste. Remove it from my diet and put me on tofu and wheat germ and that will alter me- not just physically, but in many other ways as well.
When my wife sold her motorcycle after having kids, a part of her went with it. She may live longer, but at what cost?
We could all live out our lives in a padded cell and live a long time. But I don't consider safety and longetivity integral parts of living. Climb a rock. Skydive. Eat fettucini in a heavy basil cream sauce.
Anyone can die tomorrow. I'm not going to die tomorrow wishing I played it safe.
I'm holding everyone to a higher standard- a standard much higher than my own

To be honest, I subcribe to the theory that we do not process cause and effect like that.
You are at a party and someone just brought a bowl of punch and left it on a table.
You are 3rd in line.
Harry takes a cup full, drinks, comments on this being the best punch he ever drank and instantly drops dead.
Sally takes a cup full, drinks, and agrees that this is some good punch and instantly drops dead.
You do like a good bowl of punch. What do you do?
I think the average person will pass on the punch. But that is a simple analogy where you are faced with the immediate and apparent consequences of your actions. However, life's choices are not laid out as simple as that.
But my ramblings aside, it is apparent that with all the information out there about smoking enough people still smoke. And old smokers that were addicted before they knew the whole story are replaced by new smokers that do know the whole story. Not because a smoker calculates that he rather live 50 years enjoying a daily smoke vs 73 without a smoke.
Captain Perverto's life did not magically become a whole lot better by smoking. Smoking is not like winning the lottery. Smoking is now a part of his life that he rather not give up because he likes it. He thinks he is prepared to deal with whatever may come later on down the line, whether that be nothing or something. You never really know if you can deal with the unknown until you are face to face with it.
I would stop interrogating smokers. We all do things that are not logical.

Your point is invalid. Just because some people don't get sick from smoking, doesn't mean other people won't and they have the right to gamble with other people's lives. My grandma died from smoking, grandpa died from living with a smoker, and my uncle died from throat cancer and he smoked 3-4 packs a day. So, just because it's not a problem for you and your family doesn't mean the effects are exaggerated.
