Could not root for Nick

As I understand it, we're supposed to be rooting for Nick throughout the film, but I found him to be a completely unlikeable person. The relationship with his son softened him somewhat, but was too scattered and inconsistent. In their first scene, his son is embarrassed by him, but is later noted to view him as "a god". In order to get us to root for Nick, the movie went overboard in trying to vilify other characters like the Senator. If most people saw a guy like Nick on TV, trying to spin away the truth, we would hate him. It's interesting how the movie is able to spin people into rooting for Nick, but maybe that's the point.

What's not to like about Nick? His crusade was never about smoking. He simply worked for the tobacco companies. His voice was always in support of free choice. And I just don't see freedom of choice as a villain.

"Atlas Shrugged- Part 1"- Coming soon to Canada and on DVD!

Are really we supposed to "root for Nick", or just watch him?

I like Nick, for two reasons:

1) He's good at what he does. It's always wonderfully entertaining to watch a skilled person excel at what he/she does and pwn (spelling intended) the socks off of someone else. He knows the game inside and out, and he rocks at it. I hate the game, but I love this particular player.

2) He's honest. He may dance around the issue but he never lies in the entire movie. When pushed and asked directly, he answers truthfully: he does believe cigarettes are bad for your health. He never fudges the facts towards his son and explains in plain terms what he does for a living and what it requires.

For these things, I like Nick alot.

That was the point. It's the idea of the anti-hero, cheering for someone we'd hate in real life.
