John Travolta got a Globe nod for this?
Couldn't he at least have made an effort to sound like a woman?
Or done the same accent from one line to another?

no and he was all the more brilliant because of it....he wasn't going for cheap parody
shareYup, nothing cheap about fat-suit drag!

no, cheap would have been mocking the female character, but he didn't do that.... he played her straight and with sympathy
shareAlso... he did a brillant portrayal of staying true to the history of the charachter, which has ALWAYS been played by a male actor in drag... ALWAYS.
shareOn first viewing, I couldn't stand Travolta. WAY too over the top. Divine would have been embarrassed! But every time I watched it, I liked him more. I just didn't understand the way he played it (even tho I knew both Waters and Divine, some). Maybe that creepy scientology thing got in the way...
I would have never guessed that he would be a good choice, and do so well in it.
Any artist creates something, and they hope it is accepted - and loved (or any of us, just telling a joke. The stakes aren't as high, but it still can sting if it falls flat). I'm really impressed with JT. He really went out on a limb, and sold it!
