Main problems with this
It didn't have the "Soul" it should have. 1988 had it more; this was more 'light', nearly to the level of High School Musical.
2. Travolta's casting was horrible.
Well, Zac Efron did do HSM only like a year before HAIRSPRAY, so I think that's kind of the feel they were going for with Zac involved. Previous to HSM, Zac wasn't in stuff that would have received as wide an audience as HSM or HAIRSPRAY.
