The Help
Like Hairspray, an all-star early 60s civil rights based film with some lightness but much more serious in theme, but with a fashionally hairsprayed racist villianess, played by an 30 or uner actress.
Hairspray-Amber Von Tussle [in cahoots with her mom Velma and parrelling Penny's mom Prudy Pingleton]---as played by now then-22 year old Brittainy Snow
The Help-Hilly Holbrook [in cahoots with her several close personal friends such as Elizabeth]---as played by now 30 year old B.D.Howard.
Both have cutye hairstyles and white bread but have the dark racist side of that..
But of course even much more differences, not only overall tone but Hairspray is a musical...still you get a great early 60s rock-r&b feel but The Help doesn't have a lot of its own songs, so, say, when Hilly Holbrook goes out to confront Skeeter [Emma Stone] Chubby Checker's Twist sequel, Let's Twist Again, is used....while Hairspray would have had an orinal song...I wonder if The Help would survive as a musical? I'll post that to the Help board.BTW as Hilly Holbrook had, so should Prudy [Allison Janney], and Velma [Michelle], in addition to Amber should have their own chocolate pie.
Oh, by the way, one other thing The Help and Hairspray have in common:
Allison Janney. One of the great character actresses these days....and great Negro, colored, African American, black talent.
