It doesn't surprise me Aretha may be a brilliant singer, but Latifah also sings extremely well and is more of an experienced Actor.

I think that was the point. At least part of it. Latifah doesn't come close to comparison as a singer to Ms. Franklin but she is a superior actress and is also closer in age to the character. And Ms. Franklin is old enough to be Motormouth's grandmother so that would make her too old to be Seaweed's mother, though they could have accommodated Aretha and changed the character relationship.

Now don't get me wrong, I think Aretha is a great singer obviously but I'm glad
the part went to Queen Latiffah.

i was surprised when i first saw that but thinking on it, queen latifah is an actress as well as singer and has an established persona so it makes sense i suppose

Aretha's pretty old. 70, today? I think Queen was a better choice.

Yup. Aretha is the superior singer, but her acting is just too horrible, especially for a part that has more acting than singing.
