HELP! Why was Edna shocked seeing the 3 black woman on TV???

As Tracy is singing "Welcome to the 60's" WHAT was it that Edna was so shocked about when Tracey turnes the TV on and points to it? Was it that there was three black woman dancing on tv or was it over what they were wearing?

reply

She was shocked about Tracy trying to make her leave the house and about the women on TV apparently joining in with Tracy's efforts.
And, of course, we saw earlier in the film that Edna doesn't really care for The Corny Collins Show, regardless of any other factors.

reply

My impression (which may be wrong) is that she was shocked because they were singing at her...

"Why do grapes bob up and down in a glass of soda? -No, really. I wanna know!"

reply

It's supposed to be a joke because the women on tv start singing the same song Tracy is singing and because they are clearly pointing to her and singing directly to her lol.
You wouldn't be just a little freaked out by that?
Also, the whole point of the song is to show Edna how much times have changed so I'm sure the fact that there were black people singing on tv in flashy clothes could have something to do with it... but it's mainly supposed to be funny.

I think it was 3 black women on tv. Remember this was set in 1960's Baltimore, written by a man who lived here at that time. Stuff like that didn't happen. Baltimore had segregated newspapers!!! The Baltimore Sun and the News American were for whites while the Baltimore Afro-American was for Blacks.

Right, but they established in the first 10 minutes of the film that there already were black people on TV; "Negro Day" happened every month, & Maybelle appeared on other days to promote it.

reply

I don't remember it BEING "Negro Day" at that point in the movie.

It was also mid-evening at that point in the movie; Corny's show wasn't even on. My point is that the idea of blacks on TV was not new, & just because blacks & whites weren't dancing together doesn't mean there were NO other shows with ANY black people.

reply

I think it was the clothes.

reply

True. And I don't think "Negro Day" is the sort of thing Edna would be watching on TV, because of what she thinks of Tracy watching dancing and singing.

I just thought Edna was more shocked and dazzled by the glamour and style of the three dancers, rather than them being black.

reply

She was shocked because they were singing directly to her from a TV set.
