I know than when i watched it i thought it would be just a retread of high school musical (since it was really pushing Zac Efron, since he was so popular) bt i was surprised by how good it was. Great music, good acting AND the casting was phenomenal! You could see the love for the stage show, orginal movie and musicals in general. It's one great movie.

You must have not been familiar with Hairspray then... the 1988 movie or the Broadway musical. When I saw trailers for this movie, High School Musical didn't cross my mind in the slightest, despite Zac Efron being in it.
I wasn't even remotely surprised that it was good... the musical was excellent and I've always enjoyed the 1988 movie. I would have been more surprised if it was bad.
i knew vaguely of the original movie and the broadway show but i simply had never seen the 1988 version and didn't the interest in doing so until much later, so that being said: i wasn't familiar with either. but i 'd wager that quite a few people were in a similar position to me.

I must admit I can be a snob when it comes to remakes but this one was really good and do tend to play it when am bumbling about doing my morning routine, esp for the song Good Morning Baltimore :) I've the original 80s one on DVD but do prefer this latest one :)
Although it did bug me as to who played Corny Collins as was like "I soooo recognise him!!! Who is he!!!" then realised it was Cyclops from X-Men :)
I wouldnt mind seeing the show but tickets are far too expensive!

shareI'm all for musicals and I love going to them for a remotely enjoyable experience at the theater. I found Chicago entertaining, Rent was occasionally enjoyable, Phantom wasn't awful, and I figured I'd like this one too. But I didn't know it would be THAT good. I mean, we're talking like 8-9/10 good. I had no idea it would be nearly as good as it was.

shareI thought this was going to be terrible since I didn't see the source material. 2007 was a great year for movies and this is still my favorite one from that year. So much blood and sweat went into this thing. The actors worked their asses off and it pays off. It never is lazy...it is fun and very well done.
shareI caught it on TV for the first time a few nights ago and just kind of left it on because there was nothing else on. I had my laptop on too so I just thought I'd just casual watch it and laugh at how cheesy it was. Then after the detention scene, I turned off my laptop and the movie had my full attention. I loved every minute of it and as soon as I could, I gave it a second viewing. I haven't watched a movie which made me smile this much in a long time.

It was 10 times better than I thought it would be.
