Why remake your own movie?

Was there a point to this other than some extra cash?

Firstly it is a film version of a stage musical based on the original film, and secondly it wasn't made by the same person.

John Waters produced it but didn't write it nor direct it. In fact, he told Adam Shankman to forget the original movie and "do his own thing".

As for "the point"... Well, a lot of remakes suck because they're just the same thing over and over. Turning it into a musical makes it a difference experience.

On this site he isn't even listed as Producer, just as the writer of the original 1988 film.

Sorry, I was wrong. But he was still involved in the movie. He even had a cameo.

I know he had a cameo.

Well this is a movie version of the musical rather then a remake of the original. It's kind of like if they decide to make a film out of Legally Blonde The Musical.

Many remakes are done to bring it to the next generation. You may not want to watch an old movie that is in black and white, but a remake in modern times will have the story told again. I mean just think of a book like the Little Mermaid, do you think you'd have ever heard of it if Disney hadn't remade it?

I love watching remakes then watching the original. I love the movie the Birdcage, I found on Netflix the original french version, it was great watching it! Seeing how they took elements from the original and brought it to the new version :)

Some other remakes I enjoyed:
The Women
Anna Karenina

All good points. But this is a different version. And a more family-friendly one. Have you ever seen a John Waters movie? Especially an early one? They are for a very select few. This is the only one of his movies that I can watch twice. And I've seen this over a dozen times. It really works for me, where the other versions are just OK.
But remake your own movie? This is a bit of a stretch, but how many Die Hard's have been made? Rocky's? Most of the 'male violence' movies are really just remakes of the same story.

Wizard of Oz.

The Wizard of Oz that everybody thinks of (you know, with Judy Garland) was a remake. Actually the second remake.
