Ellen Page is gawdawful
I can't figure out why so many folks think Ellen Page is such a great actress. In fact, she is a terrible actress. Judging only from her performance in Hard Candy (I definitely do not intend to track down another of her "performances"), Page is affected, pretentious and overbearing, shamelessly chewing up the scenery in an irritating attempt to mimic somebody's idea of what a free-spirited young brainiac might sound like. Page's painfully calculated mannerisms are amateur-hour theatrics, impressive only to other wannabe thespians in a low-level actor's workshop, perhaps. Page reminds me a lot of Candice Bergan, another painfully talent-free performer. Although young, Page has all the earmarks of the washed-up theatrical hack who struts around the stage at community dinner theaters, bleating and gesticulating wildly in order to convince the undiscerning audience members that she is "acting!" Well, I guess a person can be a "ham" at any age.
