When you jump and get abruptly stopped, your neck is bracking. That's why you usually have the rope only around your neck and gets dumped from a lifted place. At least in a "nice execution". That's why it is also important that the executor has to check this. If the poor soul bounce back on the bottom or get hanged on a tree (with getting lifted), this can be a really ugly, long process. Another reason why this method was/is so popular in hate crimes.
