How is it like Rushmore?
Besides the whole kid getting kicked out of private school and going to public how is this movie anything like Rushmore in terms of plot, character, or theme?

sharewell thats basically why people say its like rushmore.
Also the drunk father connection (Murray and Downey Jr.)
As well as the bully turned friend (The Scottish guy, and Murphy)
So yea actually there are quite a few similarities between the two movies.

don't forget the whole outsider acting like someone else to get what he wants theme.
shareCharlie is a catalyst in putting on a play just as Max puts on a play in Rushmore.
share-Begginings are both daydreams
-Kid interested in marine life
-Kid dressed up for public high school
Opposites
-Poor vs. rich
-Great student vs. terrible student
The Soapbox: "This place is just as stupid as ever. Damn, I've missed it."-Embertstorm
in my opinion..
- jason schwartzman's character gets kicked out of a private school for extracurricular activities (charlie and his sessions)
- jason schwartzman becoming friends with the bully and encouraging the bully to be in his play (charlie and murphy)
- jason schwartzman's character's desire to belong/fit in hence joining clubs/etc. trying to seduce the teacher (charlie bartlett gave lessons to be popular/fit in)
- minor note: the latin thing, yeah sure it may not be a huge part in either movies but still. in rushmore, max fisher brought latin back (charlie bartlett's blazer)
both are about teenagers that feel they don't belong and create/find hobbies to help them fit in.
I'd tell you all of the blatantly obvious similarities but they've just been stated in the posts before.
Also recall the more subtle things: Max Fischer wears his private school uniform to the public school he attends, and so does Charlie Bartlett.
In other words this movie has A LOT in common with Rushmore...
OK I never saw Max wanting to fit in he just did whatever he wanted, Charlie's entire motivation was to fit in.
Charlie's relationship with Downy was completely different from Max's relationship with Murray, one was an authority figure vs a rebel the other was two men fighting for the love of a woman.
They get kicked out of private schools for completely different reasons, Cahrlie was selling fake IDs, and it wasnt the first one he was kicked out of, Max gets kicked out bc he has babd grades due to his to many extracurricular activities.
Everyone keeps naming the same similarities and they are all completely superficial and have nothing to due with what either movie is actually about.
I'm so TIRED of this piece of sh*t movie being compared to Rushmore. jesus christ, just because its a movie about a quirky kid in private school doesn't mean its like Rushmore. The stories are DIFFERENT. You might as well say that The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou is like Titanic because they both take place on a ship.
I completely agree with the poster above me: people are naming the most superficial reasons to make their case valid about comparing these two. I don't see any parallels in story or characters. I just *beep* don't.
THANK YOU!
