Lots of people wouldn't mind about that, for various reasons. Like if they really liked the person I guess, which I think he did...or because he knew she felt upset abut it and wanted something more.
With any partner you have to take proper STD precautions (condoms or getting tested if you're really paranoid of the skin to skin viruses that can be transmitted even with condoms), no matter where they've been, whether you know it or not.
