question about the ending (spoilers)

I just finished watching 3 iron and it has made its way into my top 10 movies of all time. Basically what I got from the end at first was how the protagonist escaped from prison and is now happily with the woman at the end...

But after watching the movie again with the commentry, I wasn't sure what to think. The first time I watched it, I didn't really understand the subtitle of the movie at the end. The 2nd time, I noticed their weight is actually 0 on the scale... Does this mean the protagonist died in jail? Is the ending scene really part of his dream? Or was it part of the woman's dream? AHH So confused! After watching it again, I felt this movie was very sad.

reply

i dont think anyone died, this film isnt sad in my opinion. the 0 on the scale is just to make you wonder what is real and what is not. it sends you into a dream reality almost.

i don't read books, they ruin the movie for me

reply

you can interpret it as you like it. people are either in the "he lived" or "she's dreaming" side. he definately lived since he was released from prison, because the police called the husband to tell him that he was released

the zero on the scale - you see the girl fiddle with the scale at the end. she knew his weight, and her weight so she could have just altered it so that when they both stand, it goes all the way around back to the start - zero

I viewed it as a symbolic way of showing that they perfectly balance each other. They fit together perfectly and hence were made for one another. It also has the beautiful sub-text that through their love all the weight of world has fallen away.

I recall that when the intruder repaired the scale and weighed himself, his weight was 54 kg. Then the girl weighed herself, and she weighed 46 kg. Combined, their weight would have been 100 kg, which could have been the limit of the scale (one of my scales only goes up to 240 lbs, and 100 kg is 220 lbs, which is pushing the low-end of typical scale limits, but it's not improbable). Therefore, I am assuming that he was playing invisible and was standing on the scale with her. If this was the case and 100 kg was the limit of the scale, it would wrap around to 0 kg, which may support the "balance" theory.

reply

I like your theory but unfortunately it does not stand up to facts. The scale goes up to 145 kg. He is 64.5 kg. and she 46.5 kg. Together that makes 111 kg which is what the scale showed when he stood upon it, before he had fixed it. That means that the scale was 46.5 kg over 0, the same as her weight. We see in the end that she changes the scale again, most likely so it would read 0 when they where both upon it.

noone dies, theres no balance.

its simpler than its made out to be.

I think everyone should put more attention to the final frase in the movie, something like "Is very difficult to tell if we live in a dream or reallity" or something like that. I think the film is a beautiful mix of both of them. Recently I felt in love in a very unusual way with some girl, and sometimes I had that weird feeling...of living a dream or dreaming some strange kind of life.

The movie becomes more abstract at the end with the man becoming unseen. The scale does one of two things. It's a really smart way to let the audience know it's the end because it's the balance and two, it's also a note of their disappearence. Together, they are unseen by the world. I mean, throughout the movie, are there a lot of people? They live in a city.
