The actors give you a better clue about this movie. I think some people are on the wrong road in understanding this film. You don't really need to know about South Korean culture to understand this movie. The movie kind of has a buddhist sentiment to it though.
I think the English title for this movie is really bad. It could confuse people. The direct translation of the title, "Bin-jip," is "Empty House." I have no clue why they made the English title different from the Korean title.
