Lynchian...

(SPOLIERS... I THINK) I really thought the latter third of this film, when he finally becomes the ghost, was really Lynchian (to it's massive merit, btw). Those slightly wobbly shots as he stalked eeriely through the corridors of others' homes really reminded me of Lost Highway, and to a lesser extent the succeeding Lynch films which all utilise this camera technique. Anyone else agree?

An excellent film, totally unique 10/10

no.

when someone uses the same camera movement it doesnt make him similar in style. no at all lynchian.

I kinda thought it was familiar and then realized yes its the Lynch way.

But Kim Ki Duk is awesome, just the animal cruelty part is wrong. Am happy that there are no more such scene in this movie. Two must watch movies for everyone will be this one and Spring,Summer,Fall,Winter and Spring.

Other movies are thought provoking, caricature of the social problems. So you better watch them when you are really in thoughtful mood.

Hope to see more good movie from Kim :p

But you're a doctor! It's your job to heal people!. How can you just let her die!

I think Lynchian is a greater thing than you suggest. It's the juxtaposition of the mind-numbingly mundane and the extraordinary in a stylised way.

You are wise. OP is silly.

I definitely thought it was Lynch-esque (like most of Kim's other work), mostly because of the lack of conventional meaning/plot resolution. Overall I find Kim's stuff to be more coherent or at least easier to relate to than Lynch, although it sometimes needs a bit of research if you're unfamiliar with Korean culture.

The concepts of the movie are so universal, but presented in such an absurd but compellingly watchable way, yet so devoid of a conventional resolution... it shows human emotion in a very realistic way in the context of a strange but entirely possible situation.

To do all this while making such great art is quite something, and I think it's a bit unfair to Kim Ki-Duk to compare him to Lynch, and vice-versa. They are both incredibly creative and original directors, doing their own thing.

I do like Lynch very much. I myself watch Lynch's films at least several times each. So I understood where you come from.

However, I think both the 2 directors are genius and they had their own ways making film. Actually the only similar we can find in this 3-Iron and Lychian is that they are both mentioning about dreams, or illusions of life.

Other films from Kim are not quite similar to Lynch.

Also, Lynch's camera shots are generally mysterious & eeriely & wobby as you said. But Kim's more precisely and beautiful when it comes to scenery. Agree with me?

And yes, both Kim and Lynch are the two greatest directors (and screen writers too, Kim is also actor) in this decade, so far as i have seen. How talent some man can be.

I also thought about Lynch and Lost Highway in the prison scenes.

The Beginning is similar to "The EduKators" / "Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei"
The Medium part is like "Lost Highway"
and the End has some "Wings of Desire" / "Der Himmel über Berlin" in it.
