Where is HD versions?

So, there's no Blu-ray, and there's no HD rental, so I gambled that I might like the film and bought it on iTunes HD.

iTune's HD version sucks big time ( blame would be on the studio ). It looks like it's either upconverted from DVD or it underwent crappy compression. Looks really bad, and a huge bummer for such film.

I've bought a few HD iTunes versions due to lack of Blu-ray and those look amazing. Luc Besson's Angel-A looks great. And even kiddie film Penelope ( Christina Ricci ) for my daughter looks great. I was under the impression that this film is wildly popular. There's no interest in doing HD transfer of this film at all? Why?

Blu Ray came out exactly at the same time this movie came out and most people were still throwing crap at it. Strikes me as odd that Sony decided to add Talladega Nights as a launch title for the PS3 instead of this one. I loved everything about it! (Save for the historical inaccuracies here and there)

In 2006 digital film was in its infancy. This movie may not have even been filmed digitally, thus no "digital" high-definition copy of it exists, only the analog film copy. It's a shame since those Versailles locations and the lush costumes would have been AMAZING in HD, but there you are.

Film has higher resolution than most digital and definitely much, much better dynamic range. I was wondering why there isn't a proper transfer.

That's no shame at all, film has 10 times more of everything than digital. Yes we can't see it now but eventually there will be a transfer and it will be really good, whereas had it been shot in digital it would be crap, like all digital films are.
