The symbolism of the hummingbird?

Do they represent death in general, showing up when someone is about to die? Or does each hummingbird represent the soul of someone who has already passed on?

Or do you have a different thought? Thanks.

The hummingbird is the only bird in the world that can fly backwards. Hurricanes spin counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. These, among other "backward" motifs involving clocks and so on, tie in with the major thematic elements related to Benjamin Button living life in reverse

I love it, that's very cool, thanks... hummingbirds fly backwards? Excellent; I'm glad I asked... Jeez, I love this movie; I love to slide under it's spell.

The hummingbird appears out over the ocean and during a hurricane, both unlikely times. It thus symbolises something significant is about to occur.

I once saw one on a snowy day in December. It seemed magical. I checked with some hummingbird experts who said it was not that uncommon.
