I wish the villain prevailed

I liked his character more than the girl, and wish his plan went through and the family killed. She shouldve just been cooperative and could have spared the life of jackson and a huge hassle.

... because then we would have been spared all those boring moral implications, not to mention ninety-nine percent of the plot, and, wow, isn't it irritating when female characters in movies actually show strength, initiative, and integrity. *yawn* "Hey, b[it]ch, do what I say."/ "Yes, sir, oh infinitely superior man-person, sir." / End of movie. (Sounds a whole lot like Twilight, actually. Think I just answered my own conundrum here.) Gosh, yes: that would have been much better. And about eighty-four minutes shorter. And I have a beautiful piece of land for sale in Brooklyn. Has a great big bridge on it and everything. Feel free to make me an offer.

Anyway, Captain Incompetent didn't die, even if Lisa actually had the gall to get all uppity on him and smack his bony butt into next week. You can be happy about that, at any rate.

Silly feminist, getting all upset because of someone's opinion.

We'll be tortured no matter what, so we might as well worship Him.

Not sure that would make an interesting film...
-Call the hotel and tell them to change the room
-Ok
***EXPLOSION**
-Ok, now you can go home

Alcohol- the cause of, and the solution to, all of life's problems.

I agree, i wish cillian's character had "won" i mean this was a "thriller" isnt the worst supposed to happen? not all happy go lucky at the end? i just finished for the first time, and loved it by the way.

reply

I'm not sure if his entire plan should have prevailed, but in the house scene at the end, I was definitely rooting for him.

I think the problem with Hollywood suspense thrillers is that you know exactly how virtually all of them are going to end right from the beginning. The good character defeats the evil character and survives to have a cheesy celebration scene at the end. There are some exceptions, but for the most part, Hollywood is too obsessed with the same cliche happy endings. At least with foreign thrillers from Europe or Asia, where the villains actually do win a decent amount of time, there is some real suspense because the hero's victory or survival is not assured.

The ending for Red Eye, though, wasn't particularly bad compared to other endings some thrillers have had. I found Rachel McAdams' character to be relatively likeable, and either way, whether or not Cillian Murphy's character succeeded or at least killed her at the end, would be fine with me. At least it wasn't a cop out deus ex machina type ending where the writers intentionally make the villain stupider at the end to make him mess up and avoid succeeding.

I don't think that's totally true. There are plenty of thrillers where the bad guy gets away, which sort of leaves room for a sequel. [ie Phonebooth and The Stepfather] However, there are also movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer that seem to end and then a sequel comes out anyways.

While I had a feeling good would prevail with this movie, it was really up in the air there for a while (no pun intended). I also had no idea the fight would be taken to her house; I figured it would all end on the plane.

All in all, I found it incredibly enjoyable. Kinda' wish there was a sequel... ;)

for those who want to see the villians/terrorists prevail, check out Arlington road, with jeff bridges and tim robbins. what a terrific ending.

reply

I have to agree this was one of the movies in which I wanted the bad guy to win.

Jackson didn't die, Wes confirmed it in an interview. Also, when ABC showed the special extended edition, there is an ending scene where you see Jackson being wheeled away on a stretcher.... alive.
