When i watched this during its run, I thought bill was a nice religious guy just rying to support his family. Now that I'm older, I'm seeing how condescending and manipulative he is. He even treated the woman Wendy who worked for him that way. She said, "I don't know you are talking about" and he gave her a "See, you don't know". I wanted to smack him.

Yeah, I think that's kind of he "trick" of the show. Bill's sort of like the reverse of an anti-hero. By first appearance, he's a good guy and you reflexively root for him - because he's positioned as the protagonist - but he's really not a good person at all.

Agreed. Stubborn Bill thought he was living by his principles, but he would not try to understand any other's point of view. I was pleased by the final episode; it could not reasonably have ended any other way.
