Astounding action scenes ruined by poor CGI.

I felt like ranting about this.I know that the budget was quite a constraint, but just imagine how spectacular (not that they aren't already) the action scenes would have been if few more millions went into the CGI.The contrast between the wonderful cinematography, the bewildering sets, the perfect color scheme, the camera work and the sub-par CGI felt a bit distracting.

I disagree. While I'll admit the CGI wasn't the best I've seen, I thought it was solid and didn't cause any distractions. Eastwood was able to do some amazing shots with it, like the two POV shots of pilots strafing Suribachi and the scenes involving the bombardment of Iwo.

I normally take note of bad CGI but when I saw this movie I really didn't see anything that really stuck out in that department. I thought the battle scenes were great, I wasn't distracted at all.

Why do you feel the CGI was sub-par?

The aircraft and battleships were well researched - it's certainly head and shoulders about Michael Bay asking a modern US aircraft carrier to sail backwards.

I also would like to know what subpar CGI you are referring to. Even though I was well aware of the majority of it simply because I know that they don't have access to the correct warships etc, I did not actually see anything that was noticible.

Please elaborate which scenes you are speaking of.

The inly thing that stuck out to me was the exaggerated numbers of ships and vessels that were seen in some shots. Sometimes, less is more. I haven't seen such exaggeration since Troy.

I agree - parts of it looked like a video game.

The only shot that really stood out to me as poor (or maybe, obvious) CGI was the soldier whose head was blown off. It just looked too "clean" to me, as if the CG artists quickly imposed the actor's face over a dummy head.

The early battle scenes in this film are actually not the film's strong suit. Still, it does a good job of portraying how massive an effort Iwo Jima was for the American military. A small island right by Japan took a monster effort.

The best CGI is where you do not notice it, here you noticed it a few times.
