"...the war scenes didnt even feel like they were in the 1940s like Saving Private Ryan felt."

So you're a WWII veteran, huh? That makes you about 80 years old. But you sure sound like a kid.

LOVE that these two are watching the depiction of the bloodiest battle in WWII, and its aftermath, and are bored. All I can say is, be glad you weren't there. I guarantee you wouldn't have been bored, or if so, not alive for long.

Neither of you two seem to be able to follow a sustained storyline for long. I'd stick to simpler films if I were you. There's plenty being made for your like.

Personally, I'm OK if people don't like this film. That's true of all films. But please have the guts to admit it when the reason you don't like a film is based on your viewing limitations. Don't try to turn it into a bogus criticism of the film.

"... the almost bluish cinematography made me remember all the recent films such as the Bourne Trilogy and even the CGI looked a lil off(the cannon firing), as opposed to almost no CGI in Saving Private Ryan."

Now THAT's criticism. I agree the CGI was flawed, almost comical if you look hard enough. But I still enjoyed the film very much for the story it had to tell.

"...the war scenes didnt even feel like they were in the 1940s like Saving Private Ryan felt."

You cannot and should not assume that one film depicts the real battle field more than another. One might be a better cinemagraphic image than the other, but both battle fields were depictions of what the soldiers/marines encountered. Different geography, different armaments, different obstacles. I'm curious, besides the bluish imagery what part of this film did not feel 1940's?

It doesn't feel like Saving Private Ryan because Iwo Jima is in the Pacific... Not Europe.

The OP obviously took a break from Pee Wee's Big Adventure and Big Top Pee Wee to add his insipid comments about this war film. I personally found this film terrific and exciting.

Why do these morons think we care about their opinions anyway?

reply

I like 'Pee Wee's Big Adventure'! I like this film too. Don't knock the film down because of the OP's attitude.

I didn't like 'Big Top' actually.

I agree with this users comments. Regarding later comments, whether you might have been in a war or not is, to my mind, completely irrelevent when reviewing a film. I have to admit that I bought this DVD with high expectations but, after half an hour was still trying to work out what it was about. OK- it appears that the whole film was about the fact that the guys being feted in the States were not the ones who actually raised the flag- but is that worth a 2 hour movie- I think not. I really couldnt get into it and gave up after an hour or so. Letters from Iwo Jima was much more involving but still gave very little sense of the fierce battle that raged for days on end over Mount Kiribachi and the rest of the island. Both films were, to my mind, disappointing. If you want to see an excellent, believable, war film that you can really become involved in, check out the Korean films Welcome to Dongmakol or Brotherhood and you will see the difference. Still, everyone to his own, as they say, and if we all liked the same things, what a dull world it would be.

The movie was telling a story and trying to make a valid historical point. If history isn't your thing then OBVIOUSLY this wouldn't be your kind of movie. Don't see why you have to make an a** out of yourself and declare that to everyone on these boards...

Talking with your pants pulled down again, I see. "The movie was telling a story and trying to make a valid historical point." Amazing. You get your historical education from movies?

reply

the movie was terribly boring at times. the book was much better.

I watched the movie simply out of respect of all those guys and gals that went through hell, that sacrificed so much....them, their parents, their relatives. For all the sorrow they all had to endure so we can do the things we do.
