5/10. Here's why:

There's no war movie cliché FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS doesn't use. Unlike the movie above, it doesn't have a uniqueness to tell it apart from other movies of the genre. However, the acting and cinematography are good and the characters are sympathetic enough.

Any thoughts?

yeah I am beginning to realize I like Clint Eastwood as and actor not a director. Despite coming out in 2006 I just got around to see this. I was actually kind of excited to finally see it. Been on a bit of a WWII kick recently. The movie sucked. I would not recommend it. Didn't care about the any of the characters, it was filled with cliches and whole thing looked fake. Most people I would think would consider Saving Private Ryan as the gold standard for WWII. This movie isn't even close. After see this I no long have any interest in see American Sniper. Do people really consider this a good movie? I don't get it.

It is not a person's fault because they succeeded. It is a person's fault if they failed.

The link in the OP also includes my comment on that movie.

IMHO, it's one the same level as this movie.

Really deep comment!
Didn't care about the any of the characters ...
Why? Was it because they were real life characters?
... it was filled with cliches ...
Like what? The film attempted to tell a number of interrelated real life stories.

Saving Private Ryan is indeed a great film, but is telling a fictitious story using the context of the Normandy invasion. Flags of Our Fathers follows the lives of the six flag-raisers through their early lives of innocence, military training, fierce combat and afterward, when they were sent on tours to raise money for war bonds. It's a completely different story with both Pacific and American homeland settings.
... whole thing looked fake.
I thought the 1940's domestic settings, the naval and military action was wonderfully recreated.
I don't get it.
That's pretty obvious.🐭

Well as they say, Saving Private Ryan is the best pro-soldier & anti-war movie ever made. So in that respect it does set a gold standard....

But this movie is an entirely different beast. I don't think people liked it because of it's drama over action theme...which is a uniqueness that sets it apart, the only other example I can think of for a war movie that tried to do the same was Thin Red Line & that film was as pretentious as it was beautiful. This film lacked the overly artistic metaphors & cut straight to the humanity.

6/10 for me and i was disappointed. I'm an Eastwood fan, a drama fan, a war film fan and fan of films that tell good, interesting, compelling stories. This just missed the mark IMO. Didn't work for me. No huge criticisms except maybe the acting and editing. I honestly didn't find it very interesting and i hated that i felt that way about it.

Watching LFIJ now. Hoping for a better film.
