Why enter the village BEFORE the artillery strike?
I'm no tactical expert but that seemed a bit stupid to me.
"You see old friend? I brought more soldiers than you did"
The artillery strike was called in after they left as a response to the enemy presence they had encountered.

I think they mentioned the artillery strike was coming before they went in. That's when I thought it was strange.

There is no mention of an artillery strike before they enter the village. There are two teams that enter the village: one, under Khokhol, enters down the center, while the other, under the radio operator, enters on the right. We follow Khokhol's team. Right after Stas is shot, the second team meets Khokhols' team in the middle of the village. That's when the radio operator yells out that they must go because the artillery is about to start. We, in fact, never see anyone on camera call in an artillery strike, but we can assume that the radio operator called it in.
