Why this movie is good

At the end, when the men defending the hill outpost were being assaulted by an overwhelming force of mujahideen, I yelled B.S!!! While at the same time I was yelling at the soldiers to fight, dont let them kill you, you can still win! Dont DIE!!! Because I had become so involved in the story of these men!The arc of each characters story as they were transformed from outcast miscreants to soldiers who were serving on one of the most lethal battlegrounds in their times.( I might add that these men received limited training and the life of each soldier was not as important to the russian army as was their ability to fill out the ranks so to speak) I felt a grinding anger/horror/disgust, when it became clear that these men had been abandoned, that they had tactical advantage at hand in the form of the two attack choppers, and although they lost their ability to call in support, someone on the other end should have taken the loss of radio contact as a bad sign and sent backup right away.

I realized that the battle, while being historically based, was very much a overdramatic, inaccurate depiction of the events that actually occurred. But it was still real to me because I was able to feel the soldiers distress, I had been with them from the beginning, and although it may be understated to some people, I think the character development was well done. I am particularly happy with the performance from Artur Smolyaninov.

I guess what Im trying to say is that the truthfulness of their situation resonated with me. It seemed to be a very real story despite inacurracies and flaws that are the handicap of filmakers(most annoying thing about most war movies is the fact that they dont have to sacrifice accuracy in weaponry and tactics in order to 'dramaticize' the story. They simply dont take the trouble to do it correctly.
Disclaimer: what i dont know about the soviet-afghan conflict could fill the ocean
