This movie made me remember why I love being a soldier

Even if they were the "enemy" back then, you can't help but feel the joy, sorrow, excitement, and pain of those Soviets. I'll be going to that godforsaken place this may and I'll do my part. We created a monster to defeat the Russians at a terrible cost, here's to hoping we can right our wrongs.

best of luck soldier..

I hear you,but I felt that the movie was slightly unrealistic seen from my time in the military(including time in ISAF),that and the soldiers acted very undiciplined..no adherence to basic infantry tactics etc..but I guess thats just the nitpicking you do automatically when you have spent countless hours training for and executing these things until you can do them in your sleep.(plus the "old" soviet red army did probably have some differences from any modern western army)

Anyway, good luck on your deployment..youre gonna need it these days.

The Soviet Army before becoming the Russian Army had major differences.

Heavy reliance on numerous conscripts (though they still bested the mujahideen) and brute strength of armor and artillery. It was more or less the world's largest ground force at its existence.

Plus, the Soviets never really placed so much importance on the individual quality of the average soldier, tanker, pilot etc compared to that of the US and NATO

Let the world change the punishment for sexual-related crimes to execution

At the time of war (both Afganistan and Chechnya) conscripts were trained for about 3-4 months before they got sent straight to war. Bearing in mind most of them never held a gun before the army draft.

reply

it was probably added for dramatic effect. IRL the Soviets repelled hundreds of mujahedeen during the ending battle while losing only 6 men.

Likely the Soviets were as capable as the nato soldiers

reply

agreed.
I almost feel that we would be better off if the Russians won that war. The Soviet Union was going to fall any way, and maybe some forces secularization would of done the Afghans some good, as opposed to the Taliban ruling them. Look at how all the other Muslim former Soviet republics are doing. They don't have nearly the same problems with religious fundamentalism as the non-Soviet Muslim countries.

reply

I don't think it would've been good, at least for Russia. Look at all the terrorist acts done by muslim Chechens in Russia. It was bad enough, no need for the Taliban bombing us as well.
