why were they taunting each other instead of fighting? were they just bored?

An English-speaking Japanese soldier sang a nasty version of an English nursery rhyme that defamed the Anglo-Saxon peoples. The Japanese then yelled: "You don't 'fancy that' do you?"
An Australian replied; "Never heard worse." Then they lobbed a mortar onto the Japanese position.
