Afghan Mujahadeen: "Were not scared of the Soviets, but we are afraid of their helicopters". (Afghan conflict) - i guest its says it all.

If you're gonna scare the *beep* out of a mujaheedin then nothing says "run home to momma before I chase you down and you die" like an Ugly callsign (AH64), that thing is just nasty. The A-10 is awesome as well.

The Mi-24 is a good balance between troop transport and gunship, even if it looks fat, but it's not that scary looking.

For me, one of the coolest things about this movie was all the Hind shots.

For those who think it is fat, it is faster than the Apache.

I spent a few years in Russia, working as part of a multi-national military unit that Dmitri Medvedev began. Being able to pilot the Mil Mi-24s, I was extremely suprised to see how easy it was to pilot them. I've been a helicopter pilot for a number of years but these would've been child's play to a beginner.
They're so robust, also. A friend of mine I made over there told me that during the Afghan War, an Mi-24 had its tail rotor shot up (I forget by what, could've been an Orelkon, but I honestly can't recall) and after putting it down in a small Soviet base in the heights, the crew cut apart a car's bonet and welded the sections onto the rotary pylon and used it as a rough & ready repair till they returned to Bagram.
Whether that as a story is true or not, I couldn't say with certainty, but it'd be a hell of a story. That being said, I've seen pictures and videos of damaged Hinds that have large chunks blown out of them, rotor-blades missing, cockpits damanged beyond recognition, the under-chassis torn to shreds; you name it. I feel safer in an Mi-24 then I do in the AAC's Ah-64 AW Apaches, without a doubt.

But in regards to the OP's point, I certainly agree. Like with many Russian vehicles, it has a predatory look to it. I also flew in the gunner's seat of an Mi-28 and I've seen the Kamov KA-50 Black Sharks and one of the KA-52 Alligators; all of the above look menacing and predatory, certainly not aircraft I'd like to see on a CAS run nearby.
Though again, I think much of Russia's tech has that appeal. From the early T-models through to the T-90A (especially the T-34) and the IV tanks to SU-37 Terminators and all of the MiG models. Hell, the Katusha (I forget the spelling, 'Stalin's' Organ, the WWII Soviet MRLS system) looks evil as hell!
Gotta say, that's certainly one of my favourite elements about the Russian military; practicallity and reliability with looks only a mother could love.
