What Dr. Venture Actually Did to the Monarch to Make them enemies is...

...nothing!

A lot of people, including characters in the show, have asked what Dr. Venture did to the Monarch to make them enemies. Well, this is actually explicitly addressed in a sneaky way early into the series. I noticed this years ago and posted it then, but people never really seemed to catch it.

If you pay attention to the episode where the Monarch tries to win back Dr. Girlfriend in season 2 (I think it might be called Hate Floats), there's a scene where they are arguing over the radio and the Henchmen can hear them. The Henchmen are talking over the conversation, but if you listen really carefully you can hear Dr. Girlfriend say something like, "And besides, you waste all your time and talents arching a loser scientist who never even did anything to you in the first place!"

Since they know each other so well, and have been dating for years, surely they discussed Venture at length. So she knows the Monarch started arching him for no real reason. It was likely just arbitrary, so for something utterly miniscule, like making fun of his butterfly poetry in college.

I bet it was hate at first sight. Rusty didn't have to do anything, the Monarch just didn't like him and found someone to funnel all his angst into

The rivalry being based on nothing would kind of be in keeping with the theme of seemingly important moments in the show failing to live up to expectations (see, e.g., The ORB). There's also the line he had in that little speech he gave to 21 and 24: "Ever since I met the guy I just wanted to kick his ass. I wanted to build a machine to kick his ass. I wanted to build an empire to house the machine to kick his ass."

Based on that, it's reasonable to guess The Monarch knows very little about his actual reasons for hating Rusty; just that it's one of the few things in his life that is a constant and makes sense to him. Given that they interacted with each other when they were very young, there's also the possibility that Rusty did something to The Monarch when they were both children that is in The Monarch's subconscious and leads him to hate Rusty, but that he is unable to actively remember.

I wouldn't rule out Jonas being somehow involved on that front either; not likely in the most obvious way--the whole thing with him likely turning the original Blue Morpho, The Monarch's father, into Vendata--since it seems like The Monarch doesn't have any interest in, or knowledge of, it; he seems to believe both his parents to be buried-in-the-ground dead, and is seemingly completely fine with it. Rather, if Jonas were involved in the "real" reason for The Monarch to hate Rusty, my money would be on it being based on something that happened before the plane crash. Maybe by Season 13 in the year 2042 we'll finally have our answer.

After all these years of build up, massive attacks, attempts on their lives, etc., I bet it turns out to be somethign really stupid, like:

* "He stole my parking space and made me late for class on the first day and the teacher wouldn't let me in and my grade point average suffered because of it and I couldn't get into a ivy league school! That di(k!"

* "It was ... it was that haircut. I knew the second I saw that mullet-looking thing on his head I'd have to end him!"

* "He spoiled the surprise reveal at the end of Return of the Jedi!"
