What a garbage...
One of very few movies that i turned off half way through.
Actors were, to put it gently, horrible. Plot would insult even for mentally challanged ape.
Do not dare to watch it.

have to agree, its pretty crap. I am so disappointed, it was pure bland.
sharei thought it was pretty sweet-ass.
Would you please like to inform me of what you would consider to be a good film exactly?
this movie is definitely great
too bad most of the dumbwits posting negative comments here dont get it
I agree. A very atmospheric piece of horror from start to finish, yes, there was a couple of times when things did get a little confusing, but it really did not affect my enjoyment of this quality film.
shareI got the movie. I still found it terribly boring.
share"One of very few movies that i turned off half way through."
A big reason why we shouldnt give a *beep* about your opinion there kiddo, maybe if you actually tried to invest in the characters and setup you would have enjoyed it.
I know that paranoid final scene really cemented it for me, the characters were nicely fleshed out and it was allways a 'oh *beep* no' moment when one of them bit the dust.
Go play with your mentally challenged ape.
i dont get it, why dont you like this movie? theres nothing not to like.
maybe because you didnt like it that it was foreign? wasnt the cover sleeve
in the dvd a dead giveaway? lol
the only thing i didnt like was i was confused most of the time. and
i accidentally hit 'repeat' and i honestly thought i was r-pointing loll

Like ive said before,
The reason a lot of people dont like this movie is becuase for all intensive purposes it makes NO sence.
I liked the acting, the cinematography, the lighting all of it...
But the story.... jesus h christ.
You only need to look at any of the threads discussing the story to see that the so called know it alls all have completely contradicting opinions on what the film was about.
One says it IS haunted, then another says its about human physcoligy, poltergiests, time travel etc.....
I have to agree with Knight Yellow: it was confusing enough that I felt that it was, at best, an 'okay' movie. Some people seem to be looking TOO much into it. I mean, it was a story of a ghost or ghosts who possess the living who wander in, and make them kill themselves or others as an act of revenge for their own deaths. Whoever died last apparently takes on the 'responsibility' of luring in more victims.
Layback
There are no stupid questions. Just stupid people ASKING questions.
So by that argument you would also consider Donnie Darko to be
"garbage"? Ot Pi, or Cube or any Tarkovsky movie? I certainly don't think that a movie is garbage because people don't agree what a movie means. If, as a viewer, you want to be led by the hand and told what to think then perhaps you shouldn't watch movies designed for adults. Stick to movies starring Jean Claude Van Damme, or directed by Ewe Boll.
Great film.
Subtle, implied horror, atmospheric with enough material for cerebral stimulus.
Everything that the Americans cannot do.
I suggest the 'negative' reviewers stick to Eli Roth, MTV style bubblegum, cliched kiddy horror for their kicks. Anything in this genre from Hollywood, really.
Alright Kevin... You tell them...
Strange things are afoot at the circle-K.
There's nothing worse than somebody who doesn't like a film being chastised for "not getting it", when they are entitled to an opinion and they don't have to back it up either. I was pretty disappointed with the film, mainly because I found the characters to be a bit silly and annoying, lots of hysterical screaming unnecessarily, and yes, I didn't really understand what was going on. With other films I can accept a degree of ambiguity, but in horror I like to get what is happening, although this film was quite well made in a lot of respects.
shareI only just watched it and I don't understand why some people don't understand what happened. Seemed straight forward to me.
sharewtf
sharei am so *beep* tired of people who come to these forums just to hate on the movie. even though it is your opinion, krie, do not try to persuade others not to watch it. they can decide for themselves. your comment is just your opinion. to a lot of others, this movie is pretty good. i think the movie seems good. i saw it at best buy, next time i go im gonna buy it.
share"This movie sucked"
"This movie was awesome"
Both completely meaningless points of view. Some people like things that others dont.
But if it's a statement of opinion, how can it be meaningless? These days, we're supposed to assign equal importance to the view of every person. Unless we're talking something which can be proved, in which case the two or more differing sides must introduce sources to back their arguments up.
But art is subjective, and apparently every view of every piece of art is equal.
My brother and I just rented this movie. It was entertaining enough, but we were left saying "What the hell?" to each other. There were so many things unexplained. Who was the female apparition that kept appearing? I know she was the in photograph they found, but beyond that was she just a random ghost? On a somewhat unrelated note I think this movie would make a great drinking game. You a take shot everytime one of the characters calls someone else an *beep* Actually considering they must have said it like 500 times, don't try that, it might kill you.

I love this movie. It's just really confusing, and it's not for the impatient.
shareJust curious why people like this movie? These people must be boring jackasses. The characters were really bland hell even when they die you aren't glad thier dead you just don't care. Whats with the girl in white? was she even in R-point when she died? And what was the thing watching them the girl? WTf? Did the soldiers get posses or lose thier mind? Why was it sooo long it was the same crap over and over, "theres ghost""no quit it *beep* are you messing with me" dialog God damn Im tired of people givin good ratings to crappy movies sayin this is sooo artistic? White bread must taste like cakes to these jerks.
shareokay.. for those of you who couldn't understand the movie, I'll explain it to you. (caution: I watched it without english subtitles so it might be slightly different, especially the names and the dialoge)
definite truth: 9 soldiers sent to r-point to search for survivors who were thought to be KIA 6 months ago. everything else can be interpreted differently depending on the people.
Who is the guy with the bandage?: HE's captine Kang, the only survivor from unit donkey. look closely on the conversation between the investigator(colonel han) and the guy with the bandages.
Meaning of the chinese characters on the stone
"long ago, china invaded vietnam and killed many vietnamese by drowning them in the lake. so they filled up the lake and built a shrine there.
I am where you are. anyone who has spilled blood on their hands cannot return."
since it was originally a lake, there's a lot of fog.
so the son of the undertaker(as in the mortuary guy) says "places like this isn't for tombs or cemetaries. places where the dead can't stay, the living cant stay. only ghosts do." he is basically giving a hint about how it will end for them.
"I am where you are" could mean
1. ghosts are very nearby
2. the soldiers are the ghosts.
I will explain this further later in the passage.
Soldiers corporal Cho met: on one of their helmets says "wait for me, jungsook." this guy with the helmet is the original owner of the camera sgt.Oh has. corporal Cho creeps flat on the ground with them, but the next moment they're gone. these guys turn out to be the soldiers missing 6 months ago.
the shrine and the insence: because corporal Cho went missing, the rest of the soldiers in the building joins the search. When they go into the shrine, there's insence lighted in it. corporal Cho is hiding around it. watch the insence closely, then you'l notice that it's not been a long time since lighted. either the ghost or Cho did this. the insence means respect and sacrifice for the dead.
Viewpoint with the different color sence: not human. probably ghost.
WHo are the americans?: they are surely spirits or ghosts, since later in the movie a helicopter wreckage and their corpses are found. pay attention to sgt. beck and his necklace.
when he says he's not related to the american govt, it can mean
1.im under the command of the american army, not the gov.
2.we're dead, so I am not related 'anymore'.
when he says that theres nothing alive in the Rpoint:
1.this is a cursed place. nobody comes here.
2.since nothing is alive here, we're not alive.
3.(to lt.choi)and you're not alive either
when he tells lt.Choi not to touch his stuff
1.its an american amry property. korean gov do not have control over it.
2.we wish you to stay here without knowing anything
3.we need to lure more victims.
IF americans are ghosts, how the hell did they give the bear?:
what do you care? lt.CHoi's a ghost anyway! maybe its because they're both ghosts.
The French: the radioman gets a message from a french soldier, but the thing is, the radioman doesn't speak french. this can imply that either the radioman or the french soldier is a ghost.
Sgt.Ma and Sgt.Jang: Sgt. Jang complains that Sgt. Ma smells weird. implications are
1. Sgt. Ma is a cook.
2. corpse smell the same way. Sgt. Ma is a ghost.
Hanged pvt.Jung: blood. lots of blood. corpses 6months old don't have blood. so pvt. Jung is also a ghost.
Why in the last scene, the building so clean?:
1. Sgt. Jang is the only human. the rest are ghosts.
2. Sgt. jang is the only ghost.
there's ghosts among the soldiers. Who MIGHT that be?
1. lt.Choi
-only one thinking rational
-only one who can see the tomb of the french
-only one who can see the girl in white
2. Corporal Cho
-closest meaning to death
-watch closely the helmet cover. it changes
-kills 3 people directly or indirectly
3.Sgt. Jang
-his serial number starts with 81, but others start with 83
(the serial number on your dogtag is issued by date).
-In the beginning of the movie, Captine KAng says that he collected everyone's dogtag who were KIA. in the last part, Sgt. Kang is upset because he lost his dogtag. it's already been collected by cpt. KAng.
OR, is everyone not human?
-except for the beginning, nobody is sweating; all along the movie.
vietnam weather is very wet and hot; it makes you sweat just by sitting in the shade. if they don't sweat, it can be implyed that they are not human.
So, the movie can be interpreted into many ways.
Saw the film last night and got/agree with most of what you've written - Thanks by the way for taking the time to help those who didn't 'get it'.
Problem is, I still think that this is a very disappointing film. OK, not as bitter a disappointment as 'Miami Vice' or 'Da Vinci Code', but then again what was in 2006?
It's well shot, but the story! Jeez! Repetition must apparently be a virtue in Korea, and if so, this is one of the most virtuous films that you'll ever see. The film is frisson-free, especially compared to other (read Japanese - e.g. The Ring, Dark Water, The Grudge etc.) recent international breakthroughs, failing as a thriller or horror flick. And yes, viewed through my myopic European eyes, I do think that the acting was singularly one-dimensional - Admittedly this could be a cultural thing and seen with Korean eyes, the actors are emoting for all that they've got! Who knows. In the end you don't care anyway.
The fact that I've said that I didn't like this film doesn't automatically mean that I can't stand foreign films, or that I am an intellectual dwarf etc. I accept that it's a bit rich starting a thread about how crap a film is when you've only seen half of it, but this whole *beep* up attitude that anyone daring to express an opinion that's negative needs to be castigated and denigrated, is incomprehensible. If you disagree, fine. You can even list/argue/discuss what you disagree with. I love the fact that a lot of the threads here just insult (the intelligence) of anyone that doesn't like this film. (At a guess, most of these comments are from US users, and the nuance-free mindset of 'either you're with us, or against us' really has filtered down to the bottom feeders) Life would be simple if everything was so black & White...You like the film? You're a God amongst men! You don't like the film? Well you obviously find anything more than a three minute cartoon challenging!
Let's get this straight. I saw the whole film. I got the story. I liked the lighting/filming but I thought that the storyline was repetitive, the film unengaging and boring, and the acting stilted. Basta!
That's just my own humble opinion, with the stress on 'my'. Watch it, and make up your own mind - but at least you've now been warned.
Well ... I agree.
It's not that i don't like horror movies... hell i love them. And i like Korean movies too.
It's just that this movie is really bad.
It's not a drama:
Characters in this movie act like 9 year old boys lost on the way to sunday school.
It's not a war movie:
I think that my gramma knows more about tactical ops and military thst director of this movie.
It's not a horror:
Nothing new. Same old tricks, same old plot.Almoust fall asllep half way.
If you really want to watch good Korean war drama i suggest "Joint Security Area" .. now this is one hell of a good movie
I'd have to say that while this movie wasn't awful, everything in it has been done before elsewhere to far higher standards. If you've seen any 'Nam flick, Horror flick, or Asian flick with a cool, mysterious hero, than you really won't get much out of this movie.
shareBefore I offer my personal OPINION on this film let me clarify a few points:
* Big Eastern cinema fan
* Big Horror fan
* Big fan of cerebral movies
I must admit I was dissappointed by this film. I'd heard good things but after watching it on DVD with 2 mates (also fans of the above - one of them has actually been to the building it was set in - a former Casino in Cambodia) we felt let down.
It was a good premise and some scenes were certainly atmospheric - but I think the directing was a little bit banal and cliched. The whole 'spooky-vision' Ghost point-of-view shot became hackneyed in the 80s and they totally failed to capitalise on the excellent locations. And despite some strong leads, the rest of the cast was quite weak, too much shouting and over-emoting.
Which brings me to my main point - it just wasn't scary. It was clearly aiming to be a straight-up Horror film, especially towards the end, but it just didn't hit the right marks. As soon as strated to build up some tension it would cut away and move on. There wasn't the sense of creeping dread that categorises great horror films.
With a better script, a refined cast and a more experienced director, this could have ranked a lot higher in the Asian Horror Collective that is currently dominating the genre. However, as it is, it's just forgettable.
I thought the acting was good, aside from the Americans.
This film is just too vague!
Ambiguity can be a good tool, however, it's not used to it's best devices here.
The actors are a bit OTT, well, some were, the Lt's were good though.
The location wasn't used to it's full potential - however some scenes were v good - i.e the creeping dead soldiers that the lost soldier get's stuck behind (Sergeant Oh i think). That was effective.
I myself love asian cinema and horror, however, this film left me scratching my head waiting for a definitive thought to pop into my head. Which it didn't.
And the woman at the end, was, well, just rubbish really. She didn't seem to have a cemented place in the story other than the sheer fact she appeared in a photo with the french. Again, nothing clarified.
I liked the film. It wasn't scary, it's wasnt particuarly well directed, but it kept me entertained. 6/10.
Not sure why you didnt get the plot here to be fair!?
Thought it was pretty obvious in so much as it had the supernatural ghost elements that the Asians do so well in most of their films, the war setting...its a superb premise for a film.
I think it is directed very well, and is pretty eerie in places.
The plot and storyline was straightforward from what i could tell; twists were there but none were complicated in the least bit.
The US marines were clearly dead already, they were ghosts like the rest of the recruits stationed there previously.
I think it achieved its message (that war is pointless) in a rather fun way :p
8/10
I did find some of the acting quite bad. All that hysterical screaming and carrying on... Yes some people do get hysterical in those situations, but not everyone. When most people are really terrified they freeze and become very quiet.
shareI think it was a reasonably decent film, but nothing special. I don't mind it being a little confusing - in fact for a horror film that is usually the best thing, to keep the audience as disoriented as the characters. But although there were a few good scenes (the underwater bodies, the phantom troops etc.) there were no scenes which really made me (a) scared, or (b) particularly sympathetic to the characters.
Part of the problem was that it was hard to recognise the different characters - I could tell the difference between "midget" and "Sgt. Chef", but the rest were pretty difficult to tell apart (easier if you're Korean of course).
The US solders were a pretty poor addition to the film. It was building up nicely and subtly, and then the Yanks turn up and loudly hammer home the message about lots of French soldiers dying there. With one blow that buggered up all the subtlety which had gone before it.
Not a bad film by any means, and better than the majority of crappy CGI-laden drivel which Hollywood tries to pass off as horror these days. But not a patch on films like Ring and the Grudge. And as far as wartime horror films go, I think Deathwatch did a better job of it.
I've just finished watching this and am a bit confused, this thread doesn't help either:)My one thought about the girl in white - she may have been a member of the original family who occupied the house. If she was the first to die from that family it would seem that all deaths after that were revenge for her and, symbolically, the Vietnamese.
sharewell if you turned it off halfway then you shouldnt comment on it
it was a good movie
you cant predict anything, there are so many twists and turns
if you followed the story from the beginning you'll see that the acting was good.
of course its not americanized movie, so dont expect that over acted crap.
