In the book, Mr. Bennett was clearly fed up with being the only male in a houseful of women, and said some very unkind things about his wife and daughters. Sometimes behind their backs, sometimes to their faces.

The complexity of the Bennett's marriage was totally changed for this version of the movie. Instead of an unhappily idle man who was fed up with his airhead wife and "silly and idle" daughters, and who thereby created serious problems for his children, this stupid movie gave some cheerful farmer that had no effect on the story one way or the other. I hate this version.
