Then there's that other little thing about the shows' writers/director's generally not dumbing down or using lazy, clichéd tropes or falling prey to false societal perceptions, etc... Beverly Hills 50210 VM is certainly not. But that's just a guess at a TV analogy. I actually never watched 50210. Heard it was fun... 

you have to remember that he is supposed to be a teenage kid. A teenage boy for that matter. I don't think most teenage boys really care about having nice clothes.

Well he did live in the best room of the most expensive hotel in town for about 2 years or more. If that doesn't say I'm rich then I don't know what does.

My daughter had friends who weren't just kids of movie stars, they were well-known kid actors themselves. They still dressed like everyone else.
