I really had trouble with that.
That was a red flag for me that something was amiss with this story.
I had been taking it all quite literally up to that point....
But that's just too weird a coincidence that her dog and his friend would share the same name.

With that particular episode in the film, it was funny, like being in a house of mirrors and realizing---oh!---this is an entirely different story from what I thought I was engaging in as a viewer.
The casting of Mr. Murray was a red herring: I figured I had signed on for a comedy of sorts. But no harm done. And he was wonderful.
Another poster suggested this movie was a reworking of 'The Swimmer', which I thought was very perceptive.
