I apologize if I missed something here. The letter stated the son's age, and approx when the child was conceived, so it shouldn't be hard to narrow down the time-frame. I know he was a womanizer, but was he sleeping with all 5 at the same time?
shareIt does not surprise me that he might have had 5 sexual partners within a short span of time(lets say, one year). a different woman every 2 and a half months is feasible.
shareSleeping with a different woman every 2 1/2 months is definitely feasible. However, it didn't seem like each of these relationships were only 2 1/2 month flings. It seemed like he really once had something special with each of these women, or at least they all felt something for him at one time. So if all of these 5 (including the deceased) women could have potentially the mother, I think ol Don might have been seeing two or more of them at one time, which wouldn't be a complete stretch for his character. If not, I think it would be easy for Don (or at least his detective-like neighbor) to elimate one or a few of these women depending on when Don slept with them last. I only watched the movie once, but I think I even recall the letter from the mystery woman stating that their son's 20th birthday was coming up, which would be a big clue on when the child was conceived assuming it was a normal 9 month pregnancy. Good movie though.

For him to remember back 20 years and remembering when exactly he saw each of them last is probably not easy. Him being a ladie's man doesn't help. And since it's "almost 19" and "almost 20 years ago", it does leave room to stretch over months.
And some of the womens responses lends credibility to him having slept around as well. Even 'today' in the movie, where Murrays character is getting older, he still has a few ladyfriends. -That may or may not be true though, as it is only expressed through other's opinion of him and his life.
19 years is a long time. And he has obviously hasn't kept in contact with these women. If he is as "Don Juan" as he seems, his whole life is filled with women, so I'm guessing that he had to guesstimate which girls were in his life around 19 years ago. They all could have been within a 5 year span. who knows.

He probably just couldn't remember too well who he was banging 19 years ago. In reality you probably should be able to do that, but it's just a film.
Can you remember everyone you slept with around 20 years ago? And the exact year you were together? I can't. I'd have to look up 20 or more women!
shareThere are plenty of guys who have loose relationships with 5 women in a year. There are guys who have 2 or 3 semi-girlfriends at the same time.
