Well he's a loser NOW, hence the film showing all of his PAST relationships with women. The first scene shows his girlfriend leaving him. Did you watch the movie?
In his review of this film, Roger Ebert wrote that "No actor is better than Bill Murray as doing nothing at all, and being fascinating while not doing it." That pretty much sums it up for me. Murray is a brilliant actor and just commands presence on camera.
Bill Murray is much like George Clooney, at this point of their careers they can pretty much play any role in their sleep and are damn good at doing so.
While I respect your opinion and you're entitled to it.
I think Bill Murray shows his true diverse talents as an actor in this film as well as the string of others that he experimented with around this time until current. He shows that he is not just a for hire comedy actor.
The same facial expressions & laid back personality is his Role / Character in this film.
Kudos to Bill Murray for taking on this role and playing it out excellent.
I want to agree with the OP on this. It really annoys me to watch bill murray play a sad sack pouting douchebag. As I watch the movie, I get it, that is what Jarmusch and Murray decided to go with as far as his performance, but it just looks so phoned in...oh poor me. I get so much p^#%y and I live in a cool house and have cool neighbors, boo F&#^#9ng hoo. maybe I will do what the script tells me to do and get a pay check from it...
I never liked him for a second in this movie. if that was the goal~don't like bill murray in this movie, he is a bitch!~then they completely succeeded.
my bad! that is exactly the reason why they cast bill murray for this movie, because if it was anyone else, NOBODY WOULD F#&^ING make it past the first ten minutes of the movie because they would be fast asleep. We watch this movie because we love bill murray and we always root for him and even though he is boring as hell in this movie, it had to be him because nobody else could carry such a boring ass story!
You're right! I was hoping for something more from Bill Murray, but then I realized that the straight face throughout the film was perfect for the character. If I didn't turn it off, that meant that I liked it! Just so you know. . .I'm a long-time Bill Murray fan!
