So he ALREADY had the information that it wasn't Penny's boat, so there was no reason for him to close the hatch with him inside. And to make maters worse, the guy that was holding the grenade outside (Mikhail?) is shown, after the hatch is closed, only exploding the grenade seconds AFTER the hatch was closed.
Am I missing something?
Yeah, but he closed the hatch because he thought he was protecting Desmond before the grenade exploded..and yes..he could've gotten on the other side of it first, I guess, before closing it..But hey, this has been talked about many times over the years...mainly that he could also have swam out through the port hole (if he could've held his breath long enough and made it through the onslaught of water pouring in).
The most rational explanation in the end is that Charlie had accepted the fact that he was meant to die due to Desmond's premonitions about the future. He thought if his own death panned out as Desmond predicted than that would lead to the rescue of Claire and Aaron..So he expected to die, thought it necessary and didn't try to stop it.
Agreed. Which is why it was so heartbreaking.
