Playing around with Time

One thing bothers me a bit about this, I get the mail box was some kind of Time portal of sorts, but shouldn't more people have discovered it?

Eventually, Alex & Kate would have either moved from The Lake House, sold the property, or died. Wouldn't there have been a really good chance the someone else mail from the future would have ended up in there?

Weirder, but what about bills or other stuff sent to the house? Anything which ended up in that mail box could technically travel to any time the mail box existed?

Granted this is a minor flaw, but it still bugs me a bit. Otherwise, The Lake House was a good 'time,' no alcohol required.

Hope Jeremy Jahns doesn't sue me for bothering his line just once.

Where did you get the impression the mailbox could be used for anything but what was shown in the movie?

Ow, I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?

And you saw what the mail box did during the movie right? It was sending messages across Time when ever Alex or Kate wrote to each other.

There weren't any limits either, because they were both able to still communicate through time by just lifting up the flag for mail to be sent.

So why couldn't anyone else do the same thing in the present or future?

reply

It is very possible that the same magic would have worked for someone else. The movie never explores that. We do know that postal service people did not service the mailbox because otherwise the initial letter from Kate would have been picked up by USPS in Alex's time. And the letters placed by Alex that Kate never arrived to retrieve would have disappeared at some point.

The other thing that is left for speculation is the effect of the dog on the time travel of the items in the mailbox. The dog appears to be present during either the sending or receiving (but not both ends) when visits to the mailbox occur. One could ponder on whether the dog was creating the process since it is the same dog in both future and past.

Interesting, the thought that the dog was somehow responsible for the time loop never occurred to me, but I can see why people would think that.
