I took it as he was asking her about the baby because he believed it was his and even though their relationship was over, he still wanted to be involved in the child's life. I maintain that William (Leo) was the father because of the previous references to Colin's inability to get it up.

They made a point of him being interested in women early on; looking at the girl during the meeting, looking at that woman's ass (I didn't think it was fake), then meeting Madolyn in the lift and wanting a date with her. It came off as genuine to me.
They made him impotent because they wanted to establish a vulnerability in Sullivan and a reason for him and Madolyn having some difficulties, leading her to sleeping with Costigan and having HIS baby.
I mean you could overreach to make any character gay if you wanted to. Maybe Dingham is gay because he made a joke about Sullivan blowing him, and maybe all his hostility towards his male coworkers is suppressed homosexual frustration?
