Is this one of the near perfect films of our generation?

Everything about this film was great, the cast, the acting, the plot (I know it's a remake), the directing, the score. When I look back at the classics that my father and mother watched, and which they then influenced me to watch. This is one of the films I can look on a few years and influence my kids to watch.

Completely agree buddy, literally just finished watching this movie again after seeing it first time about 5 years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was just mesmerized the whole time. It's very rare a film like this comes a long now days but it truly was astonishing and it may have even become my favourite movie.

yeah top 10 for sure... I think I have watched at least 2 times as many movies as the average person and this remains on the top 10.

Great cast and great acting, yes. But the plot was meh

I thought it was the other-way-around. This film had a promising plot but the acting was phony or flat or forced from any number of participants. Hell, take your pick: Martin Sheen's and Wahlberg's scenes in particular were the worse (although the screenplay gives Wahlberg's character the coolest lines, despite the actor stiffly reciting them). DiCaprio's decent performance felt out of place in most scenes; they even came off as overacting in parts.

Even Alec Baldwin's scenes felt clunky. I just don't understand Scorsese's directorial style sometimes. So many bad scenes, so many lame character interactions, so many asinine fight scenes (almost every time somebody swung on somebody; like that scene when the Baldwin character starts swinging on the guy after the sting goes wrong, or the weak scene when the Nicholson character is dialoging with the Wahlberg/Sheen characters in the park, etc.). The convenient receptiveness of the girlfriend character to give in just enough to allow the DiCaprio character into her personal life, the lame Hollywood script taking the interaction between her and him right where the script wanted it to go, not even making their eventual romance convincing (like most movies do) or conveying for us any reason why she would do this other than because he's the protagonist and he should get to score with the hot psychiatrist.

I could go on about this film. But for the OP to even use the word "perfect" anywhere near this film I find intriguingly absurd.

I do find some Scorsese movies to be as good as the acclaim claims, but some of them are just goofy. It's painful to watch some of the scenes in this film take themselves seriously when the hyper-focused acting in every other scene just damages it.

I'm not a control freak, I just like things my way

I didn't see any problem with the acting.

He was tense and frustrated.

not even making their eventual romance convincing

With that, I agree.

What movies do you consider to be good? Did you consider The Departed a good film?

I was disappointed by this film - given its director and the actors involved. I just think the story was a little two-contrived for me - I didn't entirely buy it. I also think the actors didn't work all that well together - or maybe it was the lines they had to deliver, some of which seemed very familiar from watching other movies about police officers undercover and under pressure for various reasons.

I felt that the themes about corruption and duplicity were hammered home a little too vigorously (or obviously). The rats, for example.

It's not that I think anyone did a terrible job, but I just reacted to the movie by feeling that I was watching a movie - not like I was actually immersed in the events taking place.

Agreed- as good as a movie can be made in my opinion

reply

I'm so damn proud that I got to see it in theaters. Absolutely the best movie of my generation. Hands down.

reply

It was a lot better than Wolf of Wall Street.

reply

I realize the Scorcese connection, but Wolf of Wall Street isn't even in the same league as this masterpiece.

It was a good movie. The fake Boston accents and ball busting as like an SNL skit. I didn't like the end. Should of just had Costigan arrest Sullivan and have him do the walk of shame.

No, but it was well-done and worth watching.
